The Windows Vista Disk Defragmenting Utility is considered an improvement on its predecessor XP. The defrag engine and the manageability of fragmentation has been improved. The Disk Defragmenter runs as a low priority task in the background without affecting the performance of the computer. It runs only when the machine is idle ! It uses the Task Scheduler to automatically keep the hard disk defragmented. This automated defragmentation does not affect the performance of the Windows. For Scandisk do this - Click Start click My computer click on C:\ to highlight it click File at the top of the screen Click Properties in the drop down menu click Tools tab in the 'Error checking choice click 'Check now' Plcae a check mark against either of the 2 options if you wish - I would click to "Automatically fix errors" click Start Once that has completed return to the same place and click to Defrag the drive. Do not be afraid to defrag your E:\ drive Sugar, if it is the larger and perhaps busier then maybe it is more important to defrag that than the C:\ drive. Do it when you are leaving to prepare a meal or any other time you will be away from the computer.

Hi jane, See if this will help: 1.) Click Start, and then click Run. 2.) Copy and paste or type the following command in the Open box, and then click OK: mmsys.cpl 3.) Click to select the Place volume icon in the taskbar check box. 4.) Click OK. Let us know if that helps. Also, you said XP2. Did you mean XP SP2? If so, you really should install SP3 in order to receive all the necessary Security Updates. You may also want to run some cleaners to clean out the Temp. files, etc. that may be slowing it down. It may even have a few infections on it so I would also run Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware not to mention disk clean and defragging. May help it run faster and smoother.
