Where is scandisk/defrag in XP?

double click on my computer then right click on your C drive under tools you will find defrag + error checking on general tab is disc cleanup

Error checking is not the same presentation as Scandisk. When offered be prepared to check all options presented.It is a five step event which requires a reboot. The appearance is DOS like so don't be startled.

Files that did not fully defrag would be listed in the lower half of that window,,, under where it says files that did not defrag. Usually not a big deal. Some files that are in use when you run defrag can not be moved. Those are the ones that normally would show up in the bottom half of that window titled 'Defragmentation Report' While I dont always I prefer to defrag by starting in safe mode to a command prompt then simply defrag c: runs defrag about as best as it gets with windows version of defrag.

Hi jane, See if this will help: 1.) Click Start, and then click Run. 2.) Copy and paste or type the following command in the Open box, and then click OK: mmsys.cpl 3.) Click to select the Place volume icon in the taskbar check box. 4.) Click OK. Let us know if that helps. Also, you said XP2. Did you mean XP SP2? If so, you really should install SP3 in order to receive all the necessary Security Updates. You may also want to run some cleaners to clean out the Temp. files, etc. that may be slowing it down. It may even have a few infections on it so I would also run Malwarebytes and SuperAntiSpyware not to mention disk clean and defragging. May help it run faster and smoother. Hi owbist, Thrdfrt what each poster above has noted is good advice but as you have seen they all use different methods. Unlike any other home user item a computer offers so many ways to accomplish a task. None need be wrong, it is simply a personal preference. OK, so from what you are saying is that, you can defrag in safe mode if you want or you can just use the other programs without using safe mode if you wish. That makes total sense to me. So it is as simple as that. That's good to know and now I can make my decision as to what I want to do without fear of messing up. Thanks for the great explanation. BTW, I hope that you all know that I wasn't thinking in the terms of right or wrong here, it was all about me being able to understand it. Sometimes I see things more complicated than what it actually is and my focus is, there is only one way to fix this problem. In this case, I don't need to stay on that one way track, I understand now that I can choose a different route that still gets me to the same place. 1. Error Checking- This takes about 35 minutes.
Start - my computer - right click local disk (C) - properties - Tools Tab -
Error checking section - Check now - check mark both boxes - Start -
This requires a restart to begin.

Start - Run - type - sfc /scannow - OK
Don't forget the space between c and /
You may need the Recovery CD if any thing is found wrong.
Don't insert unless asked for. Takes about 35 minutes.

Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools -
Disk Defragmenter
Or you can do as others have written.
