My almost finished main/guest bathroom remodel used to have a standard bath tub with a sliding frosted glass shower door. I hated that thing. Whenever I wanted to take a bath, I felt claustrophobic (even though I'm not). And getting in and out was oddly uncomfortable, even though the opening was plenty large. The only thing I liked about the shower door was being able to lock the dog in when I needed to give her a bath. I could also see the doors as being good splash-prevention if you had children showering. One other thing to consider is your selection of a swing-open door vs. slider. Using a swing-open type door will mean that the door will be closed while taking a bath. For me, that would be uncomfortable. I like to be able to rest my arms on the sides of the tub (to relax) and the door would be in the way. Personally, I would not want to have a glass door on a bath tub ever again. I would suggest you do a test-drive of some sort. Perhaps try bathing with the shower curtain closed or even putting up "doors" of cardboard or some other material to simulate the feeling of having actual doors. Maybe it will work better for you than it did for me.

Ours was 3K, included all parts, glass, labor. The shower is a modified square shape a square with a slice off of one of the corners. Of course, that's where the door is. He really struggled with getting it all to line up. Mostly because the standard door wasn't the same size as the opening for it and there is an additional trim piece of glass beside the door. Looks great in the end, fainted at the price. Good to see that others are familiar with these kind of numbers. He did everything, measure, fabricate, deliver, install. They were very tall pieces of 3/8" tempered glass. It was no picnic for him!

Thanks everyone. Now the issue of the chair rail has come up of course. Our GC is working with the door company directly, and this is the email I received from him this morning regarding the placement of the doors in relation to the chair rail that goes all the way around the room, including through the shower. "If the door is hinged on the wall as we discussed, we will need to bevel out the chair rail because it is 1/8" of an inch too big. The bevel would then be filled with grout. This will allow the door to swing without it binding on the chair rail." I haven't been able to speak with him because of work committments, but am pretty sure that I emailed him saying we didn't want the door to hinge on the wall. Besides all that though, does this seem like a good idea? I'm a little hesitant since I have no idea how it will look, and I don't seem to be able to find any images online. Our experience with the contractor has been fantastic but at this point I am slightly annoyed that we weren't advised how the chair rail would affect the glass placement. The glass is already costing us more than expected, and adding another stationary panel will add even more to the total, but that said, we don't want to make the wrong decision in the long run. Advice?

Guess I wasn't clear enough with my question. I've seen the little rubber lip/dam on the bottom of the door, but that can't stop water from dripping on the floor when you squeegee the whole door if the door is open- can it? Do you clean your door while in the shower- or if you clean it while the door is open- does that little dam prevent the water from dripping on the floor?
