Frameless shower glass/door location

I did a search on this topic and couldnÂt seem to find anything about this. We are having doors installed for our shower in an L shape. The long part of the L is where the door will go and itÂs approx. 45 inches long, and the short part of the L is approx. 20 inches.

Is there a standard size for a shower door? We received 2 drawings from our GC, one with the door at the front part of the L (at the corner where it would meet the short part of the L) and another with the door in the middle of the long part with stationary panels on each side. Of course we like that one better but it will cost more because of the extra panels. My concern though is that if the door is on the front part of the L where it meets the corner, will that be watertight enough?

Forgive me if this doesnÂt make sense, I am at work and so donÂt have the drawing to attach. This process is very new to us so would appreciate any insight/advice out there. Thanks!

I believe that 28" is pretty much the standard size. Our shower is about the same size/configuration as yours. We had the door placed on the long side, hinging on the wall because that was where it would be easiest for us to reach in and turn on the faucet. Think about how you're going to use it, not just about how it would look.

Great advice, thanks! We looked at it last night and tried to measure out the door swing as much as we could and how we could reach the handles. We thought it seemed best to have the door meet at the corner of the L and have stationary panels on the 2 walls, which we realized was necessary because of the chair rail molding that goes around the room. I did ask my GC to confirm though that there shouldn't be a concern about the door meeting the glass in the corner. I seem to be the only one concerned about that though.

Ours was 3K, included all parts, glass, labor. The shower is a modified square shape a square with a slice off of one of the corners. Of course, that's where the door is. He really struggled with getting it all to line up. Mostly because the standard door wasn't the same size as the opening for it and there is an additional trim piece of glass beside the door. Looks great in the end, fainted at the price. Good to see that others are familiar with these kind of numbers. He did everything, measure, fabricate, deliver, install. They were very tall pieces of 3/8" tempered glass. It was no picnic for him!

"...Are there any hi-quality makers of frameless shower sliders?..." I thinks Fleurco is the Best in Class Winner here. Their hardware works beautifully. These doors can be ordered as kits with the glass or you can order just the hardware by itself. Make sure you shy away from a fully topical waterproofed shower pan with you barrier free build since you will need to secure a floor clip. I would do a recessed shower floor and take an approach like this for the barrier free. The dark blue section of the shower is under flood test and later had 2" of Laticrete 3701 mortar bed installed to bring the floor even with the outside of the shower. The light blue material is again NobleSeal CIS and the entire room is a wetroom After the floor test was done 2 capillary breaks where installed. One at the entry to the bathroom and one across the shower entry. Good Luck.

Clear glass and coating on tub/shower frame-less doors?

I would do regular clear instead of the low iron glass (less greenish). The price isn't worth it and the only time you can tell the difference is when your looking at the edge of the glass. As far as the coating, it's amazing against hard water. You won't have to squeegee every day. Hope that helps, I work at a glass company.

Thanks everyone for your comments and help. I took your advice and found another company. The doors will cost $1500. The quality is excellent and the company’s references, from several interior designers, were impecable. I can hardly wait the three weeks for them to be installed!! Photos to follow!

Thanks everyone. Now the issue of the chair rail has come up of course. Our GC is working with the door company directly, and this is the email I received from him this morning regarding the placement of the doors in relation to the chair rail that goes all the way around the room, including through the shower.
"If the door is hinged on the wall as we discussed, we will need to bevel out the chair rail because it is 1/8" of an inch too big. The bevel would then be filled with grout. This will allow the door to swing without it binding on the chair rail."

I haven't been able to speak with him because of work committments, but am pretty sure that I emailed him saying we didn't want the door to hinge on the wall. Besides all that though, does this seem like a good idea? I'm a little hesitant since I have no idea how it will look, and I don't seem to be able to find any images online. Our experience with the contractor has been fantastic but at this point I am slightly annoyed that we weren't advised how the chair rail would affect the glass placement. The glass is already costing us more than expected, and adding another stationary panel will add even more to the total, but that said, we don't want to make the wrong decision in the long run. Advice?
