Frameless glass shower door on tub deck
Comments (0)We are getting ready to begin finalizing discussions with our contractor. We have a tub and shower on one wall and I was thinking of undermounting the tub with granite and bringing the slab into the shower as a bench. Then we would bring one side of the frameless glass down flush to the tub deck. The contractor proposed tiling a half wall instead bc he wasn't sure how you get a seal I assume. I have seen many examples of this frameless look coming all the way down, but wondered how do you overcome the contact with granite and sealing? Thought someone out there might know. Also, I am hearing much negativity with using epoxy based trouts bc of set up issues and the fact that there are good, easy to work with grouts out there with advanced sealants. Should I just forget about epoxies?...See MoreFrameless Shower Door using Lexan in lieu of glass
Comments (2)I'm pretty certain the material in my 20+ yr old shower door isn't glass-- it's too thin and light, seems to flex a little, and doesn't sound like glass when you rap it. In all this time, it hasn't scratched or etched. I've given up getting the bottom half more than nominally clean, though. Not sure it's Lexan, could be a different sort of thing. Seems to me I've read Lexan and plexi are both forms of acrylic, which is strong but prone to scratching. The Lexan protecting a local church's stained glass has become translucent, almost opaque. I bet if you call a local glass company-- a large one that does commercial buildings-- they could tell you what's available out there....See MoreCost of Frameless Shower Door
Comments (34)"Frameless" shower doors are a highly unregulated product. By code shower doors only need to have 3 things to meet code. Be safety glass, door has clear opening of 22" and that the door open out allowing a 22" clear opening. A lot of contractors do what ever the customer wants regardless if it is safe or not and still meet code. The International Code Council had been trying to improve the way these doors are installed. The link below is a list of items experts believe will help standardize the industry and make it safer for the owner of these doors. Gluing the glass in is not safe. Comments (4)We have a semi-frameless, so there are cracks around the door and around the transom window above the door. But when we run the steam there's no noticeable escape. That said, I've never run the steam for more than 10 minutes (it's fairly new) and our bathroom is pretty large (10'x20') so take my experience with a grain of salt....See MoreRelated Professionals
