How do I stop Firefox

On my control panel I have the setting set to... Notify but do not download or update.

Yesterday morning when I turned the cpu on Firefox immediately started to update. How did they get pass my setting. Can this company be controlled at all... if not I may start looking for another browser. This update did screw me up a little and I had to overlay again with ver 8 before everything went back to normal.

Also, my tray icon at the bottom of the screen has an update icon when something is ready to update. Is there a way to see what is in the tray and selectively decide which if any programs to let fly and do their thing.

Options / Advanced tab / updates tab

in firefox 9 ... turns off there.

yes the one in control panel has nothing to do with firefox that is for your windows updates.
You have to change the settings in your firefox it self start at Tools then as stated above Options> advanced tab> the updates tab and mark not to update firefox

If I'm understanding correctly you may have inadvertently set multiple home pages, one of which is the "Options" page? Assuming that's the case, you can go to "Options -> General", make sure "Show my homepage" is selected and click "Restore to Default". That should restore the default Mozilla Start Page as your only home page. Which of course you can change to something else if you want. . BTW, it seems like that may be an easy mistake to make. When I click "Use Current Pages" while "Options" is open in a tab, it also sets "Options" as one of the home pages. Personally, I suspect that's not the intended behaviour but a bug? . Your husband is a very wise man, and has good taste. I also appreciate the taste and style of the former owners; and I appreciate how they honored the house. Nothing wrong with green. Your house is a unique house. There are TONS of cookie cutter houses out there, and more being created, 24/7 - with new builds and also with ”renovations”... Personally, I will never understand the, “Let’s just paint or whitewash/lime wash all the brick!” mentality. But I come from a place where features such as brick have value, and these type of alterations are just not generally done as a matter of course. For example: Where I am from, when considering the building facade, alone - the brick house in above pic would have so much more value than the white house pictured to the right of it. No contest. Also note the arch detail on the above house; i.e. the arches on ground level, and on second story windows. And, btw, there is zero wrong with the existing arches on your house. They are part and parcel of the uniqueness and style of your house. It would sort of be akin to acquiring the brick house shown above or this house pictured below - and then showing up here to say, ”I like the house - but the arch(es) are not ‘modern‘ enough.” Or, ”There would be more symmetry without the arch(es)” etc. I mean ??? Your house is another house. Your house also features more arches than these houses; but that is really the charm of your house!

My question: Isn't it a good idea to let it update? Like anything else if it is not updated then it may not work right later. Just a thought and I may be all wrong about that. What is your opinion on this? I wrote down how to stop the updates but I was wondering in order to do that don't you have to remove all of the checkmarks there? Thanks for all of your help.

Unless its a slow connection, let it all auto update.
My way of thinking is it keeps you safer hopefully, to have things up2date.

Jumping in here - how do you go back to an earlier version? I've had nothing but problems with the latest 9.0.1. I lost spell-check and keep getting a 'program not responding.' Then I get a Windows notification telling me to update FF to the latest version. I have to shut it down and open again.

Where do you find the older versions? I looked on the FF site and don't see anything.

Thank you mikie, that is how I felt about it. I just let it do its thing and then everything is fine. Thanks again for your response.

I had similar issues with FF updating automatically and then not working and causing problems. I went back to an older version per instructions I found here and it works great now. My observation these days, there are so many programs that have an automatic update (Windows, Adobe, FF, security software and so on) that they can cause frustrations too. Nothing worse than working on something and have the computer bogged down suddenly with checking for and or downloading updates automatically. This might not work for everyone but for me, I've found that using the option most programs have of "Notify me of updates but do not download" will give me the reminder I need and when I'm finished a particular task, let the download begin and go take a break.
