How do I stop Firefox

On my control panel I have the setting set to... Notify but do not download or update.

Yesterday morning when I turned the cpu on Firefox immediately started to update. How did they get pass my setting. Can this company be controlled at all... if not I may start looking for another browser. This update did screw me up a little and I had to overlay again with ver 8 before everything went back to normal.

Also, my tray icon at the bottom of the screen has an update icon when something is ready to update. Is there a way to see what is in the tray and selectively decide which if any programs to let fly and do their thing.

Options / Advanced tab / updates tab

in firefox 9 ... turns off there.

yes the one in control panel has nothing to do with firefox that is for your windows updates.
You have to change the settings in your firefox it self start at Tools then as stated above Options> advanced tab> the updates tab and mark not to update firefox

Smallfern, If your plants are only 10" high and you've got a worm in each plant, than I don't hold out much hope for your crop. If you tug gently on the center leaves and they stay put, then the stalk is still healthy. If the worms got to the core of the plant, you'll be able to slide the leaves out without any effort and you'll see the brown slimy remains of the rotting core. Good luck. Keep them as long as the cores are still healthy, and treat the heck out of them. PS, corn is 5/$1 at the grocery store right now.

I have the same issue and for a long time I could not figure out how the rain water is landing on top the car especially after I weather-stripped the top and sides of the door - until today when I just happened to open the garage door to clean the water mess on the car, the water came pouring through the sectionals of the door! Now it is simply not just the few drops of water that is the nuisance - if your car has some or lots of) dust the water drops create a messy look after the water drops on the car dry out - it looks really yucky on most cars and especially on a black car! If you want to go out and it is still raining, sure, the mess will be washed off but what if it is bone dry outside (sunny or not) - one is compelled to wash the mess off oneself or take the car to the car wash, unless one is ok with a messy looking car. This is quite annoying if this happens frequently as it does in the rainy season.

How do I stop my Options tab from showing up ??

If I'm understanding correctly you may have inadvertently set multiple home pages, one of which is the "Options" page? Assuming that's the case, you can go to "Options -> General", make sure "Show my homepage" is selected and click "Restore to Default". That should restore the default Mozilla Start Page as your only home page. Which of course you can change to something else if you want. . BTW, it seems like that may be an easy mistake to make. When I click "Use Current Pages" while "Options" is open in a tab, it also sets "Options" as one of the home pages. Personally, I suspect that's not the intended behaviour but a bug? . I posted a (at least temporary) workaround for Firefox users here: https://www.gardenweb.com/discussions/5343325/use-alt-f4-to-close-all-the-windows#n=6 The gist of it: about:config?filter=browser.link.open_newwindow - Set browser.link.open_newwindow to one - Set browser.link.open_newwindow.restriction to zero Info obtained from: https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/970999 It's possible you'll find changing the settings affects behavior on other sites and you'll not like it but it's every bit as easy to change them back. (Just right-click the preferences and select "reset". Even better than browser specific workarounds would be if/when Houzz fixes it... but in the meantime, one does what one has to do. :-) BTW, "alt F4" does not work for me. It closes every tab including the very last tab so Firefox closes down completely. Apparently it works for some though.

My question: Isn't it a good idea to let it update? Like anything else if it is not updated then it may not work right later. Just a thought and I may be all wrong about that. What is your opinion on this? I wrote down how to stop the updates but I was wondering in order to do that don't you have to remove all of the checkmarks there? Thanks for all of your help.

Unless its a slow connection, let it all auto update.
My way of thinking is it keeps you safer hopefully, to have things up2date.

Jumping in here - how do you go back to an earlier version? I've had nothing but problems with the latest 9.0.1. I lost spell-check and keep getting a 'program not responding.' Then I get a Windows notification telling me to update FF to the latest version. I have to shut it down and open again.

Where do you find the older versions? I looked on the FF site and don't see anything.

I had similar issues with FF updating automatically and then not working and causing problems. I went back to an older version per instructions I found here and it works great now. My observation these days, there are so many programs that have an automatic update (Windows, Adobe, FF, security software and so on) that they can cause frustrations too. Nothing worse than working on something and have the computer bogged down suddenly with checking for and or downloading updates automatically. This might not work for everyone but for me, I've found that using the option most programs have of "Notify me of updates but do not download" will give me the reminder I need and when I'm finished a particular task, let the download begin and go take a break.
