Hanging a smaller mirror over a large flat wall mirror?
A couple of years ago we were remodeling our small powder room in a (modified) craftsman style. I bought a wood framed craftsman style mirror from Home Decorators.com, where I also bought the vanity. The original powder room had/has a large mirror that fills up the whole wall horizontally over the sink and toilet.
When it came time to install the vanity, etc., the contractor refused to remove the wall mirror. Said it was too well glued on and would break and require too much time and effort to chisel it off. We were under the gun to keep going so had to agree.
I still have the wood framed mirror and want to use it. There is no place else in that small room where it will fit. It is NOT an option to still remove the wall mirror.
What would it look like if I hung it over wall mirror, centered over the vanity? The vanity is on the left side of the wall. The toilet is to the right of the vanity. The big wall attached mirror is over both of those. I think it might actually help to balance or ground the visual weight of the dark wood vanity with its black granite top. It can be hung vertically or horizontally. Horizontally it is the exact same width as the vanity. I know it would NOT look good centered over the whole mirror.
Can anyone show me how this looks, if you have done it? Thanks!

Comments (3)I think your measurements sound off. If the vanity is 33" and the wainscot rail is 41" that puts the lighting at 53" which is only 4-1/2 feet off the floor. If the vanity is 36" it raises it all 3" but that still puts the lighting at under 5 feet off the floor. Comments (5)Thanks. Actually, to make it clear, I HAD to remove the mirror (not the channel) for them to get the old top off. Once the new one was installed I came home to find that the new top sat lower than the old, thus the channel now sat about an inch higher than the top. I just was not sure it was safe but so long as the chrome strip is in the 3 studs it appears it is safe. I think it will look a little better above the top anyway. So I'll pop it back in place after putting some blobs of liquid nails for mirrors in place and then use the metal clips from HD at the top. I did not mention this but I had already spruced the mirror up a bit with some faux oak molding spot glued around the top and two sides. I may even be able to fit the molding around the bottom now. Comments (12)The J-strip/track methods feel more secure to me somehow, although I've never had a problem with others. They CAN, however, end up indirectly damaging the mirror. Maybe it's not the case with new mirrors, but with old ones, when water or Windex would get into those tracks, it would sometimes creep up the back and mess up the silvering. Comments (8)Is there a place for your mirror up the stairs, near the landing? If you don't want to look at the windows, how about putting very bold upholstery on the chairs? And then get a very large square of wood that matches the floor and "flost" it on the wall behind the table and chairs...See Morecomputerklutz
