Grout Colorant Question - X Post

I tried 2 other forums (flooring and kitchens) and no answers. It's a kitchen, hall and laundry room floor. I am unhappy with the grout color and want to use grout colorant. I'm thinking Aqua Mix per recommendation on this forum. Does it make a difference on the way it will look if I break this project up and do it on different days? Will you be able to tell where I start and finish each day? Should I just wait until I have enough time to do it all at once? Thanks for any help.

I recommended Aquamix to neighbors, they DIY'd a large expanse of floor over several days of labor spread out over roughly two months.

I looked at it with a critical eye a few weeks after they were done and it looked fine. I've been over their house several times since and nothing jumped out at me. It's a good indicator as they are about the most DIY-incompetent couple that I know.

It's fairly common to break up a job like that into smaller work sessions.

We are considering using Frostine for our walls (instead of using BM White 01 again) in the kitchen/LR/DR....; it is the "whitest" Affinity white. If you've used it, how does it "read" (white? off?)? It appears to be identical in intensity (brightness) to the 01, but warmer, which I might want (01 is a bit more stark white perhaps). I love my white walls, but since we're re-painting, thought I'd look at another white or two to see if I like either of them any better. The other color in contention is Chantilly Lace. The sample patches I painted appear much lighter/brighter in intensity than the other two whites; is it too much so when the entire room is painted with it (e.g. blindingly white)? Please don't suggest any other whites. I know everyone has his/her faves, but I've narrowed my choices deliberately (and need to decide soon!). Note: whichever white we choose, we will be using Aura paint in a matte finish on the walls and ceilings, and the same color in the Aura satin finish for the base moldings. All doors and door jambs are a light-stained oak. Thanks!

I certainly waited long enough to furnish this place (we're in this house almost 10 1/2 years!), so it's worth getting what I like and want (within budgetary constraints of course!). Besides, as indecisive as I am, I'm also very stubborn. That's what I get for being a Gemini on the cusp of Taurus!!! The main rooms/spaces upstairs will be painted Super White (kitchen/LR/DR/foyer/hallway/stairwell....)--walls, ceilings, and base molding (satin finish on the molding). Smallest bedroom-turned-office walls will be painted Spa (green) with Super White on the ceiling. Upstairs bathrooms, master bedroom and other bedroom; TBD when they're reno'd!

Hi Andybp, Your kitchen is BEAUTIFUL! The marble is to die for..... with that in mind, I would go with an off white. Looks like the tile is a slightly creamy-white, so I think the gray would be too cool a shade to use. Especially if the buttery yellow is your paint color. Either grout color would look great next to your marble because it has tans and grays, so if I were deciding, I'd focus mostly on how the grout looks with the subway and wall color when deciding. I can't wait to see your finished kitchen, it's going to be gorgeous. Do you have those amazing countertops throughout the entire kitchen? P.S. I also LOVE the hardware!

iron_city, I could remove the 1 1/2" moulding and replace it with something bigger, but finding the mahogany to do it would be very expensive. I might be able to use pine moulding stained to match. Does your crown moulding match the bookcases? That's one of the dilemmas I'm facing: do I mix stain colors? That is, how would "special walnut" crown moulding look against a mahogany stain? Never thought about painting the mortar! Need to experiment with , say, concrete stain. thanks for the idea.

I'm about to do the same thing to a summer "camp" up here where they had pipes freeze even though antifreeze had been put into the system. The result was the grout got stained by the glycol in the antifreeze, so now next week, I'll be going in and staining about 650 feet of grout (using the Aquamix colorant). You can BET it'll take me more than one day!! LOL

Bill, glad to see I won't be the only one taking more than one day. Now if I can just find the post where you give directions on applying, I'll be all set.

Bill, Bill...you're missing out on an opportunity. You're supposed to go to summer camp in the summer, not when there's 3' of snow on the ground. lol

And stretch out the warm-weather job a little with a little canoeing break, a little archery practice... ; )
