Grout color - suggestions needed, images posted

Hi all,

We are finally ready to install the backsplash to our kitchen and I'm trying to decide what color grout to use. Backsplash will be a white 3x6 subway tile that's a bit irregular in shape. Was thinking an off white or grey so the tile interest is more noticeable as we won't have any other tile detail or focal point (e.g. behind the range).

Our countertops are Valley Gold Marble and the cabinetry is a creamy white. I've attached images of the tile, countertop and cabinets. I'm hoping you can see the colors.

Hi Andybp,
Your kitchen is BEAUTIFUL! The marble is to die for..... with that in mind, I would go with an off white. Looks like the tile is a slightly creamy-white, so I think the gray would be too cool a shade to use. Especially if the buttery yellow is your paint color.
Either grout color would look great next to your marble because it has tans and grays, so if I were deciding, I'd focus mostly on how the grout looks with the subway and wall color when deciding. I can't wait to see your finished kitchen, it's going to be gorgeous.

Do you have those amazing countertops throughout the entire kitchen?
P.S. I also LOVE the hardware!

Thanks so much. I hadn't thought about the yellow wall color when considering grout but think you are right that needs to be part of the equation.

Yes, we have the marble throughout entire kitchen for countertops. We had a lot of people try to talk us out of it but have no regrets.

Will post pictures when totally complete. We are in the process of finishing a family room addition off the kitchen, which will hopefully be finished in about 4 weeks. Will photograph all then and post.

In addition to the plants I suggested on the previous thread, I'll add Deutzia 'Charddonay Pearls', which is currently blooming in my yard, totally covered with small white flowers to the point of obscuring the foliage - lovely. However, the nicest thing about this Deutzia is that the foliage is chartreuse, and so it will contrast nicely with the dark green of your other plants all season long. It is a shrub, but stays small, in my garden topping out at about 2 1/2 feet and is extremely easy care (I do nothing to it other than planting it in a bed with good soil and mulching every couple of years.) It would be fine in front of other shrubs with your perennials, or very nice in front of your porch if you don't want to obscure the porch rail. Hostas (variegated foliage and white or lavender flowers in August in my area) would be quite happy on the end of the porch away from the door and the lighter leaves would help lighten a darker part of the garden. Astilbe (flowers white, pink or red and ferny leaves) would be happy at the shadier end as would Pulmonaria/lungwort which has white, pink or blue spring flowers, but also has variegated foliage. Variegated Solomon's seal is another pretty foliage plant that would be happy at the far end of the porch. Wendy suggested something tall and narrow right next to the driveway where the euonymous is now. How about one of the smaller (6') clematis on a pretty obelisk? If you choose one that is a type 3 prune (hard prune over winter to a foot or so) the obelisk will be ornamental silhouetted against the wall when the clematis foliage is dead and pruned back. I'll also second her suggestion that you look at daylilies, perennial geraniums, and Heuchera/coral bells. In addition to perennials, think about adding to your bulbs. I love the airiness of the larger ornamental alliums, and have seen them used effectively in groups behind a short evergreen hedge along a porch like yours. Most of my Aliums bloom in the weeks after the lilacs. Lilies bloom in the summer and come in a wide variety of colors and if you have several varieties, you will have some in bloom much of the summer (don't plant if you live in New England, however, since control of the red lily beetle can be a hassle.)

Other selection needing to make is for Carrara marble polished 12x12. Would I do the same? (Silver Shadow). Absolutely. If your Carrara leans a little more toward the grey side, you might be able to go with Sterling Silver instead, but it'd be one of those two. Here's a pic of Carrara with Silver Shadow:

I would choose denim blue. I seldom like white grout. I don't think the terra cotta would look that great with the red. Charcoal would be my second choice. The denim blue would tie all three together since a shade of blue is already in the set so that's my reasoning. Nice mosaic work! She will love them.

Do you really want the grout to be a feature? I'd go with the closest match to the tile, which is either the top or the bottom. If this is supposed to look like wood (can't tell from this small piece), then it's especially important that it not really appear to have grout, or the illusion is ruined.

I would do a greige - a grey that is on the warm/ beige side.

I would suggest off white as well. Polyblend grout from home depot or Lowes has a color called Alabaster which is a nice offwhite.

Everything looks amazing. I vote for white grout...one step down from brite white.

Could you tell me where you sourced your tiles from? They are lovely.

Perhaps Antique White by Tec would be a nice choice.

I'll go with the beige/grey crowd.

From Lowes, Either Laticrete's #16 Siltstone, or if you want a little more contrast, their #17 Marble Beige.

From Home Depot, I'd go with Custom's #382 Bone, #385 Driftwood (the #333 Alabaster would also be a good choice if you want the color a little more on the greyish side), or for a little more contrast, the #122 Linen.

Thanks so much for all the advice. Will look at all the colors recommended.

sibjamata: We originally found the tiles from a store near our house that went out of business. We tracked the lady who owned it down as she still has a website and can order tile, which she did for us. I've attached a link to her site which doesn't have much but her contact info.
