Holy mackerel! Can you imagine if one of those got into the house?

I'm pretty sure that I read about a little known population of even BIGGER wetas here in the states. Let's see.....where was that? I think it might have been in SE Michigan!

this spring one of my huge new dawns had rrd. i removed the plant, removed the 19 multiflora patches at the edges of my property and bought and distributed predatory mites. well another huge new dawn [i had three in all originally] has just put out fall growth full of witches brooms, so i am removing it now. it was about 30' away from the previously infected plant. there is a belinda's dream nearby with red new growth, which is small, but not really strange looking. i am keeping an eye on it, as i cant find any descriptions that mention if its new growth is supposed to be red. most of my HTs have red new foliage, and always have in the past. it is so frustrating that the biggest most vigorous established plants seem to be the hardest hit. i noticed the plants mentioned as getting RRD seemed to usually be huge climbers esp. new dawn, and shrubs, then HTs. i realized i hadnt seen minis mentioned. i searched gardenweb mini rose forum for rrd and rosette, and got zero posts about rrd. i dont know if minis are too short to get it, or mini growers are spraying miticide non-stop to kill the red spider mites, or the red spider mites are eating the eriophyid mite [which i've read can happen] ann, you posted last summer: The reasoning behind using wiltproof ties to the way that the flightless eriophyid mites get around- they are dropped by breezes when the breeze slows down. Thanks to the dissertation of Abdullah Kassar at WVU, if they land on a rose, they sense it and stay. If they land on a non-rose they try to catch the next breeze away. What we hope is happening with the wiltproof and other anti-transpirants is that they land on the wiltproof and reason "not rose" and leave. So as to how often to spray wiltproof...you'd like to keep the leaves and stems coated. Spray accordingly i bought wiltpruf to spray the new dawn i am in the process of removing, and the belindas dream i am watching. i am using it instead of hairspray. it forms a polymer coating, which i think might trap existing mites on the plants, just like the hairspray. i wouldnt give the mites that much credit in terms of intention -- it also might be that the anti-transpirants seal up the crevices they need to crawl into to not get blown about in the wind. in http://www.ars.org/pdfs/rose_rosette.pdf, it says shrub roses are most affected because their petioles provide a tight crevice, whereas HTs arent as good a host. if the mites are so prone to be blown about by the wind, maybe if the do land on a plant without good crevices,either because of the plants natural anatomy, or because wiltpruf has filled in those crevices,the mites get blown off on the next breeze before they can transmit rrd.

Haase it is sitting by the fireplace in the livingroom. I think it was early in the morning and still dark lol. See, even IN the house I take pictures in the dark lol Rigo that is wonderful!!! He holds his hand under the coffee bean machine and eats them lol siam glad Theresa knew that it is a peace lily :-) I did find something new blooming today and I shall share it with you all now. Even though I fertilized and was not done until almost noon. Was so beat that I forgot to take pictures until just a few minutes ago. this post had me in tears when i read it earlier. I am that way about my quilting, absolutely NO desire. So I do know the feeling you get with your gardens. However, my gardens are a totally different story. I WANT to get out there sooooo badly. for the last hmm, six years, I have not been able to physically get the work done. I've finally been diagnosed with MS (18 mos ago), have had two surgeries on my neck do to herniated disks that compressed my spinal cord, and am this year FINALLY getting the energy up to get out there again. I'm starting with a clean slate, which is nice in many ways, but so daunting in other ways. I miss all my flowers so much though, that I will find a way, some way, to get them back again. I hope that you also find the desire to garden soon, the maintenance is enough to drive you bonkers when you don't want to be out there, but left alone, it's going to be horrendous to get motivated again. it takes no time for the weeds to notice lack of interest, and they take over like crazy then. wishing you all best of luck! sally

It's Saturday and the sun is finially shineing which hasn't happened for about a week with all our rain. I decided to go to two local nurseries in my town just to see and because I felt like going out. First stop was this nursery out on the highway that I have watched to see when it might open for 3 years. I kid you not. It used to be a boarding stable and has a large property. I don't see how anyone could carry the taxes without opening for such a length of time but its finially open. They must not want anyone to notice as there is just a very small sign by the gate that said open 9-5 which is new. The grounds and buildings are stunning but there is a small amount of plants for sale. Not even a third of the place looked used to me. I bought a black eyed susan vine and just looked around. Went to another local nursery that I have been too many times before but they didn't have anything I needed so I am back home. Guess I will go outside and plant stuff I bought yesterday.

LOL! Maybe one of those giant catfish you see people "noodling" for on TV although every time a conversation comes up about catfish comes up, (surprisingly often) everyone says those big ones don't taste as good.

Covered pontoon boat in the gulf (with rum or bloody marys if someone else is driving) is more my style. Fishing poles optional.

Below link says they make a noise, but doesn't say what it sounds like. Probably more of a chirp like a cricket but what if it's a prolonged noise like a locust? If a bigger bug can make a louder noise, I wouldn't want to be anywhere nearby!

It's one of those reality shows, not something I watch but have seen it flipping through the channels. If you have cable channels, it's probably on your TV. And I AM from another planet, you're from MI, I'm from OH. You seem to be an OK guy anyway though. Impressive enough to overlook the MI thing.

IKR! Ok, you caught me. It's been on at our house a couple times but our rule is "click or pick." Whoever's using the computer does not get to pick what's on TV, so I didn't choose that one. We only watch TV for a couple hours in the evening, and not every evening, but it can be a desperate time, trying to find a show that's not a repeat or a hideous cop/medical drama.

What's really funny is how there are captions at the bottom, like they're speaking a different language. Out of all the strange accents heard on TV, apparently "American redneck" is too hard for most people to understand. In person (or on TV,) I hear them very well, but not sure they always "get" me. Wish I had a nickel for every time I've been asked, "You're not from around here, are ya?"

Sitting here laughing. Yeah, what is with the subtitles anyway when people are speaking english? They do it when folks from Appalachia are speaking, but not when someone from Maine or Joisey is on. (she who understands every word Honey Boo Boo is saying) and I don't watch the tube, other than passing by it when on the way somewhere else.

All kidding aside, we DO have a fairly close relative to this Weta in the US. Every once in a while, someone posts a picture of the Jerusalem Cricket....it's easy to see the resemblance.
