Is this the Viburnum Beetle, or another insect?

I’m new to gardening.

I’m wondering what is eating my viburnums? I have looked up the Viburnum Beetle, but it says one of the telltale signs is skeletonized leaves, which mine don’t seem to be. What could be eating mine? I did find a fantastic catydid grasshopper on it in the summer, but I did not disturb him because he was truly majestic.

2)What can I do for my viburnums over the winter? They are in containers because I am landscaping where I initially planted them outside. I can bring them inside.

we need to know where you are .. big city name ...

most outdoor plants do not winter over well as houseplants...

zone appropriate plants should not need coddling.. based on age.. they either are.. or they arent ..

does the pot drain?

Partially consumed leaves on a deciduous tree or shrub at the end of November is not an issue for concern. The plant is entering dormancy and the remaining leaves - or parts of them - will drop off in a week or two. But it is something to keep an eye on next season. It is also very likely the katydid you saw was responsible for the leaf damage.

Depending on your location, maintaining a containerized shrub outside over winter can be risky but it is equally risky to hold one over indoors. Garden shrubs are not houseplants :-) You can keep somewhere that stays cold but doesn't freeze (a shed, unheated garage, etc.) but the safest method is to dig a hole and sink the pot into the ground. The surrounding soil mass will insulate it until it is time to replant.

Last year's Cucumber Beetles are hiding in debris nearby or in the woods nearby, and will be at your house shortly (about May) to begin laying eggs on their chosen cucurbits. I think you can avoid them with covers. Some folks till up their soil during (dry) cold winter weather to destroy any eggs or larvae of ANY insect that may be in the topsoil. Tilling soil before an expected hard freeze is a great insect destroyer--as you'll freeze their little arses.

Oh, thank you so much York Rose in particular. Yes I researched after your reply and found out more about this June Bug. They are the ugly fat grub buggers that we kept finding in the soil this last Winter/Spring season. I did not know if they were baddens or not. Now we know, and we will rid. But my gosh the June Bug itself is very interesting to look at. I now realize that they were probably the culprits that could divulge just about a whole leaf on my Daturas overnight. Interesting what you learn. Oh and thanks again for your kind comments on my pictures. I adore the macro on my camera, though my husband said, I was practically touching the creature with my lens when I took those shots! Oops! Thanks again. Pauline - Vancouver Island. PS Mexicanhat. Website was when we had our B&B business. It is gone now, though I do miss it. Would love to have another, "personal" one - garden related of course. It is on my wish list along with more roses! :)

Looks like one of the Buprestid beetles, to me, an adult. They're tree borers. Attached is an image from Bug Guide. Looks similiar to yours, though there are hundreds of varieties. Here is a link that might be useful:

Thanks everyone. I’m in Richmond, VA. The reason that they are on my porch in containers is that I planted them in my yard, then decided to move them to a different place. I re-tilled and composted the soil in that area. So, that’s why they’ve been taken out. My hope is to rehab them until they become big and healthy enough to plant. I will put them in the garage over the winter for insulation. Thanks all!
