Hand feed live curl grubs to native birds

Here's 3 clips about using curl grubs to have fun hand feeding them alive to wild birds.

It's much better than spraying poison around to kill the grubs.

Well, I've spent waaaay too much time watching you and your birds in several of the videos. Very enjoyable to share that with you and I'm going to go back and look some more later on.

I'd like to know more about your location, which certainly appears to be a rainforest environment.

By the way, any caterpillars that I happen to find are always tossed to the birds, but I figure they can darned well dig for the grubs on their own! My soil is hard, red clay and I can't take a shovel to it.

I have a small shack that has a bushland and creek setting that supports heaps of birds and other wildlife including many Kangaroos and at night I let Brushtailed Possums visit my lounge room for a feed on my lap.

I've just found out that if I open GardenWeb using my Firefox and paste in the youtube links, they don't work.
But if I open GardenWeb using my Internet Explorer they do work.
I hate this type of thing because I am hopeless at PC stuff.
If any one has problems then they can go to my youtube videos via frozzytoobz and search for them there.

Patrick/Prof. Dirt ~ Thx again. You're right about the "barehanded" thing. That was actually a mistake on my behalf. I do wear gloves. However I never used to be afraid to lift a gloved handful up to my nose for fear of seeing an ugly-white- monster-grub looking back at me. We live on a 2 acre woodlot so most of our compost comprises of shredded dry leaves & woodchips( run twice through chipper/shredder). I use the "hot pile" method to compost. I find I only have to use a small amount of nitrogen based ingredients (approx. 3(C):1(N) ratio). I hand dice/slice/chop all green, nitrogen rich ingredients well before. I mix everything(shredded leaves+veg.scraps) together prior to putting into the bin. Voila. Full bin heats up and ready to use in a 3-4 weeks. That's beneficial because our gardening season is short. I could eat my mix before I actually plop it into the bin. That is if you're fond of chewing dead leaves & wilted greens. LOL I don't use egg shells or that sort of thing in the bin. Vegetable based only(carrot tops/beet leaves/etc.) I contain everything in closed bins with mesh wire flooring that have never allowed rodents etc. to enter. Prior to adding the "larvae" I never had any surprises or meat protein to worry about when digging in ... But thanks again for calming my larvae/grub/maggot concerns/phobia once again. PS. I won't be adding anything like that to the "mix" again. Yuk!!

I used to have bird feeders, but not since we have had an active population of black bears. While I like having them around, I don't want to train them to think that our house = food. Although the bears hibernate, they are awake before there are many food sources for seed eaters, and I hate to habituate the birds to my feeders and then have to remove them in early spring. I do want to put out a heated bird bath for winter, though, and may try a suet feeder since about the time I would have to bring in the feeder due to the bears waking up, there would be insects available for the suet eaters. We do have a lot of birds, but they don't spend as much time near the house as they would if we had feeders. I do plant for the birds and often have nests in shrubs near the house, seed eating birds on plants where I've let the seed heads stand, and insect eaters in the shrubbery. Purple martins eat flying bugs, so that is one of the reasons folks put up houses for them. Since you plan to put up bird houses, read up about the requirements for a house that the birds will use, the preferred size openings for different birds, and how best to site them since different types of birds look for different set-ups. Just hadda share about hawks. Came to this forum to ask a bird question but this post subject intrigued me so I hadda check it out. I've had a hawk in my area for several years now, but only seen him in flight or sitting up on top of a dead tree a block away. But what happend the other day was new to me. There's a small tree across the street that all my sparrows fly to after they feed at my front yard feeders. I was out in my garden and guess I got 'lucky.' All of a sudden, I saw a big bird go flying into that tree !! At first I thought it was a pigeon since I have to deal with them, as well. But it turned out to be that hawk !! I say I got lucky, because I feel as others have said, it's nature and I've never seen a hawk THAT close to the ground!! Anyway, birds scattered, flying out of the tree all at once, making a big ruckus. Then out flew few stragglers, then even a few more after that. Seeing some of them taking so long, I was sure he'd snagged one. I took a chance and walked s-l-o-w-l-y across the street to see if he was feasting on one (not to sound morbid, but once again...it's nature). I wasn't even sure he was still in the tree but as I got about three feet away, out he flew and then just stopped and landed on a fence post, only several feet away from me. He even looked over at me as if to say, "HA HA, you can't catch me, but I'll let you SEE me." He was close enough that for the first time in my life, I could see his markings, his eyes, his magnificance. I took a another step closer and of course, he flew away...towards my house, across the neighbor's roof and then off, off and away. But it was a wonderful experience for me. I was so taken aback that I called my mom and said I wish I had a zoom camera ALWAYS hanging around my neck. My camera phone just wouldn't have done justice. I'm glad he didn't get any of my 'babies' and don't wish death on any animal, but it's survival of the fittest. It's the balance of nature. Of course -- I need to state that I DID NOT read every post in this forum so I may be expressing something that is in total opposition to another post or even the topic at hand. OK. Personally, I would rather have no lawn, no roses AND no flowers than use things like Grubex and other grub killers, which are TERRIBLE for pets, birds animals & children, water quality and persist in the soil and migrate to others' lawns and air, giving people who don't want those poisons no choice just like second hand smoke except pesticides, much worse. Whoever asked about beneficial nemotodes, they won't survive if you've used Grub-Ex. Milky spore will survive that crap though. I was inundated by Japanese beetles about 4 years ago. First I treated with Milky Spore, next beneficial nematodes (timed it before 3 days of rain, they die if the dry, but they work quickly. I also set some preying mantis babies loose. Last year really only enough Japanese beetles that I could crush them with my fingers and this year nothing. Please, Plaase look at your lawn and love the dandelions and the clover and the natural lawn. Why are people so obsessed with working all summer to get a lawn that looks like a boring green rug. Grow some wildflowers. Love your children and your neighbors' health rather than your boring lawn. Do some research and look at labels before you buy weed killers and pesticides and don't believe the things that Tru-Green (formerly ChemLawn) tells you. The guys that come to treat your lawn have a few weeks training and their bosses are guys with high school educations brainwashed by chemical companies. Think about why you think it is so important to have the "perfect" lawn. Is it because your friends and family won't like you if it isn't perfect. What matters? G'day rhizo 1, I forgot to say that where I am digging with Shrikey is on top of a solid foundation of brick hard clay. It's also next to a massive Spotted Gum Tree that also turns the ground to a bone dry concrete hard surface.
I have just built over it with my own made up dirt.But it's nearly killed me doing it because I aint very healthy.
I mention my pain in the video, and it's a fair dinkum nightmare, 24/7 and a scale of about 8 out of 10.
I'm suffering from a completely stuffed up pancreas (which was on a scale of 9 out of 10) which was removed a few years ago, leaving only a small portion to stop me being diabetic. The result is as horrendously painful as was the wretched disease.
Mucking about with Shrikey and other birds and wildlife is good therapy because I can't get out much anymore.
It's my only alternative to suicide.
I wish that any worse enemies I might have would suffer from Chronic Pancreatitis, because I know of nothing to compare the horror of CP. CP feels as if there are rats with red hot teeth devouring your insides while plugged into an electric socket.

I'm officially hooked on the videos. What an incredible assortment of wildlife. That one male kangaroo looked huge...how big is he?

I'm so sorry about your illness. Non-stop pain is a terrible thing to have to live with. I can't imagine.

G'day rhizo,.,He's a full grown Eastern Grey,massively powerful.85 to 95 kg
When he stands tall his eyes are above mine.

I don't muck about with him when he snorts at me and he shows any signs of not wanting me to continue scratching his body or head(especially when his does are around)
He could kill me in a second with one kick.
PS Our Red Kangaroos that live in the deserts and outback Aussie are even bigger
