Hi,

I just wanted to mention that the thread titled '2006 Massachusetts Shopping/Sales Post 2' was intended as one post where the group of Massachusetts gardeners could find/post any knowledge of sales,good shopping opportunities, or if you are looking for any particular plant/garden item that you are having a problem finding.

Since shopping usually is local, I thought it would be more useful to report to the smaller groups of each state rather than all of New England. Of course, that doesn't limit it at all. I know some of you travel all over New England to nurseries, so that is appropriate to post on that thread too.

I started this thread last year, because I am always looking for that information and thought it would be a good resource for everyone. Then someone mentioned they found it helpful, so I started it again this year. It doesn't seem that many are posting to it, so I wondered if everyone understood the purpose of the thread, so I am clarifying.

Since I am clarifying, I might as well ask whether everyone would rather just post individual posts of their own when they have something they want to share? I can keep the thread on the front page to keep it accessible so you don't have to look far to post to it, or I can just not create the thread again next year and let this one peter out.

So what do you think? Keep it or ditch it? :-)

Oh -- just posted to the thread. I like having it listed in one place -- and I have referred to it enviously a couple of times. I was happy when I finally had a chance to get out and find a sale!

I like the single sales post. Of course you can see that I use it and post to it! I am much more likely to add to an existing post than start a whole new discussion. Too many new threads can stifle the conversation. I think many people want to post separate new threads because they don't want people to miss things.

I think the only thing I would change is to make the title heading to '2007 Massachusetts Shopping (Spring)' and '2007 Massachusetts Shopping (Fall)'. For next year this would be useful. I pretty much ignore whether it is Massachusetts or not since I shop in NH a lot too. I think a lot of people on this forum travel among the states so it may not be necessary to list separate states. Also some chain stores span several states.

I had a thread going last year 'adventures with pantry beans'. Most were disappointing but one was so good I saved seed from the 1 lb bag to plant as a fall cover crop. They were the Camelia baby green limas. I will plant them again, they were delicious as shellies, which is something you do not get from the store, even when you can get the dried seed. Something to consider. Even the lowly black eye pea shellies, when you can get them, fetch a pretty coin.

I knew it, but didn't even consider it. My husband made way more than he did. Jannie, there are a lot of jerks out there. My husband retired from a very large well known company. He wanted me to go with him to sign his papers. I did and the lady explained that if he would give up $100 of his pension a month I could draw if I out lived him. My husband didn't even hesitate to say yes. When we got ready to leave she said, "do you know how lucky you are? Most husbands come in here with their papers already signed". I draw almost $900 a month and their wives would get nothing.

From Lexico: Origin Late Old English godsibb, ‘godfather, godmother, baptismal sponsor’, literally ‘a person related to one in God’, from god ‘God’ + sibb ‘a relative’ (see sib). In Middle English the sense was ‘a close friend, a person with whom one gossips’, hence ‘a person who gossips’, later (early 19th century) ‘idle talk’ (from the verb, which dates from the early 17th century). Early politicians required feedback from the public to determine what the people considered important. How refreshing. I love that picture in my mind's eye, someone sitting and sipping and listening to people to benefit them. Maybe I am jaded but it seemed like in the recent past, politicians only wanted to benefit themselves and their buddies. Thank you for that image, Jasdip. I hope to see more of this quaint practice, both because I want us to be vaccinated and reach the stage where we can all sit together again, and because a fully participatory government from the ground up is a warming thought.

I think I checked a melon this morning and it was still attached. I came back five or six hours later and whoa, the color changed. I look down and, yep, it had slipped. I do the tuna fish can prop, but I punch holes in it to let it drain, whack down the center, and place the can inverted on the ground. If you put the melon on the open end of the can, it can grow into it and get stuck. Throwing some diatomaceous earth around it near the end helps too. P.S. Yes, to be perfectly accurate, the "slip" is when the stem can easily pop loose. It hasn't necessarily come undone completely when it happens. But you just poke it and it comes off cleanly.
