First visit to Briggs nursery in N. Attleboro. Picked up a new hardy cactus, two nice sempervivums, some herbs and annuals and a new ceramic pot. There was a vendor out front having a nice sale on all conatiners.

Also went to Seven Arrows in S. Attleboro. First time there. It was nice despite the gray chill. I got some rosemary and tarragon.

There will be many more nursery visits I'm sure!

When I go to Logees in Danielson I will also visit Hart's in Canterbury, CT.

Thank God for American Express!!! (But Briggs doesn't accept it! Only Visa and MC).

My pilgrimage today was to the San Jose CA heritage rose garden, about 75 degrees & sunny (I'm rubbing it in, Bill) and they have 4000 rose bushes growing and blooming like crazy and slim tanned Californians biking and jogging around. That was followed by a visit to nearby Univ. of Santa Clara where there's a half mile long iron fence with all different climbing roses on it! I can't buy any rose plants here and take them back on the plane but I'm taking notes on the colors, plant habit (shrub or narrow tall, etc.) and especially the scents which no description in words conveys. So laterat home I can order some hardy rose bushes for our RI climate.

Just to make you feel better: it's supposed to rain here by Tuesday.

OK to rub it in while you can!
Somewhere nearby San Jose, I visited a university that had a huge field of Proteas, Banksias, Leucodendron, Leucospermum etc. I was like a kid in a candy store! Didn't know where to aim my camera first!

I went to a gorgeous rose garden in Portland, OR some years ago and that's where I saw the climbing "Altissimo". Had to get one and it's been doing fine for well over 12+ years now.

It's amazing how many things you can see in other areas that you might never have known about! Same as when I went to England. I want to grow Roscoea purpurea "Red Gurkha" but nobody in the US seems to have it. The UK nurseries can't (or won't) ship it here.

Silverkelt, you have frost, and last Tuesday I turned off the air conditioner. I guess the 1400 miles of distance between us explains that. In the afternoon it's in the upper 80's and dryer, no longer in the lower 90's with drippy air. Still my waistband was sweaty wet weeding in the shade, and the sun will burn you to a crisp still. It's wonderful to have the house open. I understand the Farmer's Almanac says our winter will be chilly and wet. I suppose that will compliment the summer that hot and wet. I dread the freezing nights that are coming. Those low 20's/high teens temps really uglify my garden until spring. I just bought a few winter-hardy additions for the garden. I always get Dianthus chinensis. It laughs at 18 degrees with greenery that is so green all winter it's shocking. New plants I found are 'Pinata' Lavender - hardy to below 10 degrees (I'll plant it in sand since it hates our wet summers and hope it'll be more than an annual), 'Mesa Bicolor' Gaillardia - hardy to below minus 10 (wow!), yellow mums - hardy to below minus 10, and geraniums - hardy to 32, but I'll move the pots inside. I hope these new ones do as well as the dianthus since I really hate brown, dead plants. :( Our coldest days will be in the 50's though rarely we won't get out of the 40's, but that's like once in a blue moon. We all complain bitterly while shivering violently on those days when the sky is the deepest crystal blue and the sun is bright. I've always thought there's nobody tackier than a Floridian in winter when we break out the winter clothes we brought with us from up north decades ago or the perfectly usable items we found at the Goodwill. (There are more fashionable, well-heeled types who look nice in winter, but they are fewer the further south you go.) I was always stunned by the kids waiting for the school bus in freezing or below temps in their shirt-sleeves and shorts. Aren't their mothers watching when they leave the house? Everyone says, "Well, it'll warm up this afternoon" as they turn blue. But it's true that we dress in peelable layers. Sitting in a car in traffic while wearing an acryllic pullover will give you heat stroke. But the killer freezes that hit 20 for 8 hours mean death to my garden - not to the roses though. After one of those nights you no longer have to worry about winter protection, because they can't get deader than dead. Oh, and you can't cut back the brown, because as we all know, where you cut you will get new growth which inevitably will fall prey to the next killer night. A plant with brown can tolerate the killer freeze, but a plant with new green stuff could die. New human transplants to Florida often learn this the hard way. So I love no air conditioning, but I hate the freezes. The tacky Floridian gardeners can stand the cold, but the poor, oblivious Floridian plants don't see it coming with "It was 70 yesterday" written all over their faces. Hey guys, I can't make it to the exchange, but I have quite a few seeds I can give away. I've pretty much got all the seeds I want this year and don't need any seeds in return, unless someone has some annual vincas in white, purple, lavender or pink. And that dark sweet potato vine that's often used in annual plantings. I think those are the only things I don't have that I want for this year. Annie, Your box went out yesterday morning. DC# 03062400000028162590 Hope you like everything. I sent you some daylily seeds also; saw on your trades page that you were getting started collecting them. There is nothing better than going out in your garden in the a.m. and seeing a daylily bloom for the very first time anywhere. Hope they turn out beautiful for you. You should store them in the veggie bin and plant in peat pots in a sunny window in Feb. or you can wait and plant them directly in the garden in early spring. Sorry these Iris are a little dry. When I dug up my clumps last month for trades my back started hurting soon after; so these have been sitting around waiting for me to get them replanted. You saved their lives!!! LOL They are dry, but not nearly as dry as the ones you buy in the stores. Don't you dare feel terrible about Jennid. It's my fault!!! Being a newbie I was just so anxious to get my new treasures I didn't wait long enough before contacting you. As we all know.....nobody's perfect; and I'm certainly not... by a long shot. :) I'm sure Jennid has forgiven us both; she is a really sweet person. Roxanne

We have been needing to get ours scheduled but I am putting it off a little longer. I did have to go see my Rheumatologist recently and it was a good experience. Very cautious. Temperature check before entering and a list of questions to answer. Kept mask on the entire time. Blood work done in the lab in the same office. Lots of sanitizer around. I was pleased with how it went.

Glad to hear you are getting out Bill and sounds like you found some treasures and had some fun! Where are the photos of your finds?!

We got out on Saturday in awful weather since we couldn't get in the garden. I dressed for it with layers and an umbrella, but it didn't help. I usually don't mind walking around outdoors in weather, but it was late in the day and I was tired and I just couldn't get into it. I was about to go home without a purchase and my husband wouldn't hear of it. I had to buy SOMEthing. [g] So he bought me a B*ay Leaf tree that I didn't want to spend the money on. And I picked up two packets of peas seeds which I am wondering if it is too late to plant. I didn't even get what I went for, a large bag of Perlite, that they were out of. I'm going to have to make up for that trip soon. [g]

Today I plan on planting what I bought yesterday. Photos may be forthcoming. Not sure if I should take pictures before or after they're planted.

I think the peas will be OK now. Personally I don't have the space (nor the energy) to dig and plant, especially when frozen peas are cheap, and actually not bad! LOL!

Weather should be good this week. Not too warm but pleasant for gardening work!

Here's a shot of one of my camellias that's just about finished blooming. This was only it's second year and only one flower. But it's looking healthy.

And below is what I bought yesterday. Took the lazy way out and took a couple of shots of the whole tray!
New stuff I bought (1)

Opuntia phaeacantha (orange), two new sempervivums, parsley, tarragon, and two supposedly hardy rosemary plants. One is "Madeleine Hill" and the other is "Irene", which is a trailer(?). The nursery had then both marked as zone 5 hardy, but then one of the sales persons said they "might have chance in Providence, in a protected spot." Why rate them as zone 5 then? Anyway, time will tell.

New stuff I bought (2)
2 Osteospermums for my planters, and some pansies for now. The rest is the same as the first photo.

Bill, I think April Dawn is my new favorite of your camellias. It looks very healthy! Beautiful, perfectly formed flower. I'm adding that to the list. I am always looking for new sempervivums and pansies. Love that bright pink osteospermum. Are they going in your new pot? You are off to a good start, I'd say. :-)

Ann the osteos are going into two pots that I have out on my front steps every season. For that new pot out back I envision some med. pink wave petunias, chartreuse col*eus or sweet potato vine, something silvery or small flowered white and a burgundy dracaena. But it's always a work in progress until I see it just right.

That is a pretty combination. I enjoy pink and green and chartreuse will tie it together with the pot. Nice. Photos to come I hope. :-) Doesn't it seem like a LONG spring? I usually wait until May 15th to bring out my house plants and Begonias for pots. It seems like I've been waiting for awhile now. I just hate to have to bring anything back in once they are out.

My house plants are going out today or tomorrow. The Meyer lemon had tons of flowers and I hand pollinated but it would have been better outside. The cymbidium orchids will be fine out there now as well. Also a Hedychium, dwarf banana, brugmansia, bougainvillea and hibiscus.

Time to clean out that sunroom for the summer!

BTW I haven't forgotten your cactus pads. Just that with the flood and all, I've been playing "catchup".
