Thinking about a retirement income!

I need something to do, and would like a few extra $ in my pocket!
ILOVE soup! And have been called the "Soup Nazi" on several occasions! LOL
I'm thinking of upping my soup making and advertising at local dental places that do oral surgery.
I have a food saver, and can freeze and save all sorts of foods! I do vegetarian and meat based soups (and vege stews)
Our county recently relaxed the rules on cooking stuff at home.
My question is, would you go for my soup business? I try to go as organic as possible (mostly from my garden), as organic as possible. I can't say EVERYTHING is organic

I have contemplated cooking/gardening for income. In our area there are some very active farmers markets so that would be where I would aim especially if the market was late in the day on a weekday (soup for supper!). Free samples are important and I also think help attract customers to the market in general. At some Saturday farmers markets, there are several food vendors doing a brisk business in lunches. The markets have a picnic area. If you teamed up with a bread baker, that would be a great combination even if you simply had adjacent tables.

Sorry, but I would not bother advertising at dental places. I'm a patient and I just want to get out of there and would associate discomfort with anything advertised there.

I have to agree with defrost that I just can't relate to the dental connection in any way. But as long as you can work within your state's limitations on sales to the public - no way we could do soups here - then go for it.

They would sell well here at fall and winter craft shows and similar indoor events. In this part of the country there is at least one of those almost every weekend. And consider selling to any local M&P cafes or restaurants.

Keep in mind that the liability insurance and the IRS side-effects can be a real PIA too. At times they can make it more trouble than it is worth.

Like I said - rich folks. With only one kind of income. They own quite a few Canadian stocks. Suppose the stocks pay them an income of $46,000. Suppose, now that the prices of bank shares have gone down quite a lot recently, they have about $660,000. invested that are paying 7%, to produce $46,200. last year. [Caution: I would not want to see someone with a substantial amount invested have chosen to invest it all in one company - way too risky!] When the single person calculates his/her tax load ... it'll be zero. If the "taxpayer" has a low-income spouse with some tax credits to transfer ... or makes some political contributions ... or donates some to a registered charity (and the credit is at a high rate when one contributes over $200. per year) ... or pays upwards of 5% of net income in eligible medical/dental expenses ... the tax-free amount goes even higher. You may have heard me say in some of my posts that I don't like earning interest - the number of underlying invested dollars can't grow. And the only income that it produces ... is produced now ... and it's taxed now ... at top rate. If you have stocks of Canadian companies that pay dividends and have other kinds of income, the tax-free amount reduces rather rapidly ... but you'll pay tax on the dividend portion at a much lower rate than that on most other kinds of income. If this doesn't explain it adequately, ask and I'll try again. Perhaps if you check the link and read carefully, you'll find it explained a little differently and in a way that'll be clear to you, over there. ole joyful

The problem with those far more educated and experienced... is that the risks to them are spread out and will likely have little impact on their day to day lives. The person who locks themselves into a loan (or situation) that they cannot handle, is likely to suffer much more. I agree that a 50% down payment is wonderful and if you were talking about somebody who knew what they wanted out of life and had demonstrated the means of getting it, the risk would be lessened. However, somebody who is still in the midst of trying to figure things out and whose income potential is limited, even a 50% down payment is not optimal.

According to the U.S. Census, the article continues, median income in 2014 was $53, 567. , which is 6.5% below the pre-recession level of 2007 and down 7.2% from its peak in 1999. - Again this just points out the problem with statistics...First, income is down, but disposable income is up. So we are really better off. Second, this idea that most haven't gotten a raise is complete B.S. you have to understand what you are looking at with stats or you get really scary and grim pictures. Stats can be misinterpreted either on purpose or just because the person doing the investigation doesn't realize it, Yes the average household makes less money today than it did in 1999 - but household size has decreased dramatically. The number of single income households more than doubled, the number of children per family dropped, and that is exactly why discretionary spending is way up. So while a 7.2% drop seems significant, it becomes much less significant when the people the income must support dropped almost 20%. Finally, stop looking at all income earners and look at full time workers - if you look at the top 80% you get a different picture. Yes the bottom 20% has had a 17% drop since 1999 and is crushing the statistics. But those are not full time workers, we have had a serious increase in the number of part time workers, and a decline in the hours they work, which is a discussion in and of itself but not one relating to middle income earners and the plight of the full time worker heading to retirement. Added to this that the whole idea of middle class has changed dramatically. One could argue that the whole concept is dated to the extent of no longer being useful. The idea of the middle class came about because it drew a line between certain "haves" and "have nots" - today that line is blurry at best. Access to good reliable internet, entertainment options, telephone communications, access to somewhat reliable transportation, and access to education are no longer restricted to a middle class. Compare the convenience and lifestyle of today's full time career workers below the middle income line to those people in the 1970's well above the middle income line, and see who has it rougher. Edit: At this point I will jump out of this thread - I will close with this - No matter how old you are, if you can read this take a few minutes to make sure you are making sensible contributions to a retirement plan that is risk appropriate for your age.

Oh Dave, I wouldn't go nearly so big as to do restaurant or cafes! I'm just thinking of 1-2 servings, packaged and frozen.
And defrost, I'm also not big enough for a farmers market!
I was thinking of the dental thing because several friends who have had dental surgery have loved my soups! Also my 94 YO FIL loves to get my frozen soups when he doesn't want to go down to the dining room at his assisted living place!
Hmmmmmmmm, maybe a retirement place!
I'm not talking about making a living here, just a few extra bucks. Nancy

Nancy, sorry, but I would double-check rules about homemade products since soups are perishable. I think any part-time business runs into the problem of making a few extra bucks and being a "real business". For example, homeowners insurance does not cover if a customer falls on your steps and you are considered running a home business. You might be better off working for someone else in a food business. You should talk to your insurance agent. You can get free business advice from SCORE (Senior Corps of Retired Executives) found in the phone book under US Small Business Administration. They also have a website where you can leave a question for a volunteer to answer (check volunteer biographies for a good match). You can also check with your local county cooperative extension for information on home food businesses esp rules and regulations. Perhaps you could supply frozen soups to a small local market. That's the kind of thing sold at the food coop in town and small grocery stores around here.

I think the assisted living center could be a niche. My friends get breakfast and dinner, so lunch is on their own. An easy to prep soup (heat and serve) would be great.

Make sure you fully check regs. I make, but can't sell, shag bark hickory syrup (like maple, but not sap-derived), so I give it to friends and they pay me for the bottles I buy. Also, you'll likely need to take the on-line food handing course...and have certificate handy. It varies by state.

Based on personal experience I think you might be surprised how much interest in just that would be with local small cafes. Single serving soups they can just micro-wave and serve are quite popular here.

But I have to agree with all the warning others have posted. Many of us here have learned the hard way that the state and county regs are never as simple as they might first appear.

There's a business local to the D.C. area called "Momme Meals" -- aimed at new mothers who don't have time to cook. It's mostly a few frozen soups, and also a couple kinds of muffins and a couple casseroles. I've ordered it for my parents before.

The owner's story is on the website. If you haven't totally canned the idea yet, maybe you could learn from them?
