Thank you all for your help over the last couple years

I am not looking for sympathy! Just wanted to tell all of you that tried to help me to learn to can and harvest my vegetables just how much it meant to me. I didn't dare to can anything this year as my MS has made me so confused that no matter how many notes I made from what you told me I just couldn't trust that what I was doing was right. I will just have to freeze things from now on if I can put in a garden next year.

You all made me so incredibly happy. As some of you may remember from my old posts, my mother always filled our cellar with canned goods and just having a little piece of that memory come true for myself I will treasure always. I appreciate your patience when I asked questions that you had already answered and that you helped me when I did not understand simple things.

I have spent a lot of time here and at the vegetable forum this year reading the questions and your answers. I hope you all know just how much you meant to me and all the others you have helped. I am afraid that never-give-up has new realities to face. Thank you more than I can say.

never-give-up, you have my best wishes. I hope your condition stabilizes and that you hang around to read and visit with us when you can.

Ditto what Carol said. We talk freezing too. ;) Meanwhile maybe there is a friend who would like to learn to can from you and give you a hand at the same time? Two heads and two sets of hands make it even more fun.

ummm.. the de-icer is a floating beckett brand. the pond is about 3 years? its roughly a rectangle i think 18 ft by 15... it has water lilies cat tails and some native plant, *a smaller version of arrowhead normally i empty it completelyin the winter to catch the fish. once they're all caught i fill it back up wait a few days and throw the plants back in and let it ice over. in the spring i usually end up emptying it once a again... im guessing that if i can leave the water and fish in over winter my water will be much clearer (its not that clear now) when i empty and refill i start the cycle of algae and the pond has to stabilize, right?

I forgot to say that I graduated in 1980. I think I paid the couple hundred dollars myself. I was working at the time. One of my best friends who graduated in VA went with her class to Cancun, Mexico. She graduated 2 years after me and her parents paid thousands for her to go! Now kids go to Europe and Aruba. They also have more elborate proms, only a few "rich" kids had limos back when I was in high school. Now everyone gets one. I'm dreading the day when Lauren starts going to proms. I've already told her she'll be wearing the same dress to all of them or we'll be buying them used and cheap. And no limo.

I keep coming back to this thread. So many beautiful photos. I can't single anybody's out, but Ingrid, I agree with Marlorena and Sheila about your garden. Serene. I always drool over Hoovb's and Marlorena's gardens, but Nicholsworth55, your photo of your burning bushes, made me say "WOW" out loud. Most unlike this reserved Englishwoman. Are they Euononymus alatus? It has been a difficult 2 years here. First the broken leg with complications, which kept me from tending the garden all summer and autumn last year. This year, no rainfall to speak of meant that lots of plants simply didn't flower, or simply faded away. I am hopeful that next year will be good. Still. There are some things I am thankful for.... The new little mandarin tree, which has replaced an ancient orange tree, that died of old age. Fuchsia triphylla, which flowers year round. Lady Emma Hamilton and Sombreuil in the background. Always blooming Pelargoniums. Dead and non performing plants removed, ready for replanting. Always cheerful Bougainvillea in one of the apricot trees. Self seeded lavender. In the way, but I don't have the heart to remove it. Pretty Jessica. TBC

Thanks Nat . you are a fan of UF's I take it . They are my fav's too but saying that I can't say that they are the only form I like. Debra , thanks for seeing what I am not seeing . That seedling is a bit of an oddball in that it seems to have so many (maybe too many things going on ) attributes of different daylilies , the eye , the lighter midribs , the edges ( multicolored) , has potential to be a bitone. It is almost too much . I would prefer if the sepals were not so recurved but I am not going to toss it . I will wait and see what it does next year . Kate , BBM is one of about 50 daylilies that edge the perimeter of my veggie garden. Along the top of the fence , those big leaves are from fox grapes , a wild small blue grape that weave themselves around the wire between the posts . The leaves are about as big as your hand. I grow them as they make really wonderful grape jelly . But for some plants with very big leaves here are a couple of pictures of 2 plants I grow . They both bloom with yellow flowers and can grow to 9 feet tall . One is a native plant called a Cup Plant and the other is called Rosinweed. Cup Plant Rosin weed .

never-give-up, you said it all. Never give up, just allow realities to change.

If you can't can, maybe you can freeze, we talk about that too, or maybe you just want to know how to use some fresh vegetables, we do that too.

I hope you can stabilize enough to check in here periodically and at least see what we are doing and let us know how you are. I'm sending strong thoughts for you.

hey, always nice to hear from you, never-give-up!

I'm so glad some canning came back into your life enough to give you pleasure.

As has been said, we like to talk about freezing and any other kinds of harvest-related things here, too, so if you are able, feel free to let us know how your garden goes and what you preserve no matter how.

You know I always take credit even for baking and freezing zucchini bread on the "What have you put up?" thread....

What a nice tribute to all the really nice people here at the Harvest forum. I understand and sympathize with your predicament...It was only because I found a teenager that would work cheap that I managed a garden....I too don't know what my next years will be like but I know I'll be hanging around here anyway. Good luck with your health ...we just have to keep on, keeping on.
