? Re: My New Mango Tree
Comments (8)Daisy, Congrats on your new mango tree! I love mangoes, I have several young trees I planted several months to two years ago. I'm not an expert and I am learning as I go along...but I posted some pictures on how I "hard pruned" one of my mangoes on the link below that I posted at the Tropical Fruits forum. I am by no means suggesting that you do this to your tree...just showing you that they can take to pruning very well. I would never recommend you do anything this drastic to your tree in fear that it won't turn out the way you want it. But for me, it turned out very well. BTW, I also did this to my Haden Mango tree, as I was told this variety can get big...I wanted to try and keep it manageable from the start. It suffered from the this years freeze, but its recovering. Also, here's a link to some recommendations on pruning Mango trees... http://www.virtualherbarium.org/TropicalFruit/mangopruning.htmlcolor> Below is the link I posted...Scroll down almost to the end to see the pictures I posted Here is a link that might be useful: Post from the Tropical Fruits Forum on Mango Pruning...See MoreCarrie Mango....I really get it now !!!
Comments (31)I have seen mango trees in pots with fruit all over them!! Many of them were trees that were for sale in 15 gallon pots waiting for a home.... trees that are not of the dwarf size varieties.... I can't wait until the next mango season to see what happens with mine in the pots. BTW--- I took a seed from a ripe valencia pride mango germinated it over 4 days then stuck it in soil. I left for vacation the next day and came back 1 week later to an 8inch seedling. I could not believe how fast this seedling grew. I am leaving in the full sun with afternoon mixed sun/shade since it obviously likes it so far. Anyone have any thoughts on keeping shaded all day until it gets bigger or should I leave it like it is??...See MoreWhich is the prettiest mango tree for the front yard
Comments (17)I would guess Gary-that B.M.'s reputation for cool tolerance is why Regan's nursery in Fremont, the largest non box store and TRUE nursery in my area, carried it. Just it and Manila's. At the time both BM's for sale were clearly larger then the same price Manila's in the same sized containers. I took a chance-didn't know a thing about them. Since then I have found one post-here? palmtalk? cloudforest? I can't remember..but,he said that there were large tree's full of fruit in the San Diego area. The "large tree" part stuck with me. I would be shocked if anybody else in California-dedicated to Mango growing- wouldn't also notice that race to vertical height they put on. I got 3' in two years-and that's after I tipped pruned it hoping for more bushiness..it just reverted back to shoots, shooting up-lol. This year it slowed-but that's what container and wanting fruit will do....See MoreBest mango tree
Comments (33)I live in Boynton Beach, Fl and have 3 mango trees in the ground. All three trees were bought from Excaliber Nursery. I have a Dot, Carrie and a Mahchanook. It was a wonderful season approx 90 Dots, 150+ Carries and around 100+ Mahachanooks. Without a doubt the family favorites are the Dots and the Mahchanooks. Personally I find the Carrie to be just as delicious and the most fiberless out of the 3. I agree with nighthawk0911 about picking the Carries early and letting them ripen on the counter and that truly make all the difference. After reading the expert reviews on the Carrie I bought my tree about 8 years ago and was a little dismayed by the taste and within a couple of seasons I realized that I needed to withhold watering the tree the last 20-25 days prior to picking the first fruit and before they would ripen on the tree. DO NOT LET THEM RIPEN ON THE TREE. What a great sweet, juicy and fiberless mango you will have. Needless to say if they fall they bruise easily. I want to add another tree but I'm really not sure which one, but I'm leaning toward the Pickering because the few that I have tasted were delicious and it would fit in the space available. My second choice was the Nam Doc Mai until I tasted a few and was not overwhelmed. However I'm told that I probably had poor samplings of the Nam Doc Mai....See Morejofus, ( Englewood, Fl zone 10a )
