peeling tomatoes

I just spent a frustrating hour or so peeling tomatoes. The first batch I put in boiling water and proceeded to reheat it. The tomatoes either turned to mush or were too hot to handle. Trying to squeeze the innards out on the side of a colander seemed to leave pulp on the skin.

The next batch I put in hot water. The skins didn't soften up enough, even though I changed the water several times. The peels came off with a layer of pulp attached. I gave up and just tossed the last few in.

The when I was washing the dishes, the hot water turned scalding.

I do have a roasting pan half full of tomatoes in the oven.

Is there an easy way to do this without a food mill?
