Pomegranate trees in central west coast florida

Does anyone have an idea of how well pom's would grow here in the largo/Clearwater area of florida (central gulf coast)? Is it too humid here for them to set fruit? I know they like sort of dry environments, and it can be pretty wet and humid here sometimes, but is it TOO wet here for them to set fruit?
I was thinking about buy 5 varieties of pomegranates:
a Wonderful, an Angel Red, a Granada (or Grenada), a Parfianka, and an Ambrosia.

Are these types of pom's ok or are there better types of pom's for the area? What's the best type for the area?

This question has been asked before - my mom lives in Treasure Island, on the waterfront & has a pomegranate shrub that my dad planted over 20 years ago - it seems to do fine w/ little extra care, & if it were properly cultivated, I imagine it doing great. She gets @ least 6-8 large fruits every year from the remaining plant (there were originally 2). Sorry but I've no idea what variety; flowers are the classic red/orange & fruits get very large & are pretty sweet. I believe he got them from Park Seed, if that's any help.

Somebody else nearby is growing pomegranate as well.

Thanks carolb. Did your mom's tree always only get 6-8 fruits per year, even when it was young? I thought that pom trees usually get anywhere from 30-150 fruits per tree.

Ortho has a hose end adjustable sprayer that has worked well for me with the Ortho product and the Spectra products as well. Saldut, I have to wonder what your preocupation with OGRs on Fortuniana is. If there are a class of roses that we Floridians can grow on their own roots it is the time tested OGRs. You are right about Nelson's Roses having a good selection but I would look up the mother-daughter team that is Blooming Idiots. They too are located up in the central Florida region but their specialty is pure OGRs (on own root, though). They've never had a problem growing great big OGRs in our soils (nor have I for all that matter, and I can kill a bush with the best of them). Your not getting a prompt response from Cool Roses doesn't surprise me. Debbie is the one that handles the e-mails and sometimes she gets too busy with the other stuff to get around to answering the cyber mail. I would recomend giving them a call. It's the fastest way I've been able to get ahold of them. As far as your BS problem goes...Nothing works for me as well as Banner Maxx and Dithane. Always remember that you need a contact fungicide and a systemic one to give the ole BS the one-two punch. Also consider, however, that with the heat we've been having that spraying could cause more problems than solve them. I'm waiting for a few good cold spells to cut everything back down and start up my spray program again (thrips are my constant demons). Another good preventative is to pick off the leaves with BS and throw it away in a trash can instead of letting it fall into the soil at the base of the bush. Hope this info helps.

It would last about a week in summer before the root rots would take it out! In the rest of the southeast where they do grow, they definitely only grow on well drained soils. I have had one die from root rot. In spite of being hexaploid, they are not invincible. FWIW, there's a 'trick' about the PNW - coastal CA climate. I saw rhododendrons almost in the bottom of swales at the old Greer Gardens in Eugene, OR.* You would NEVER see them growing somewhere like that in PA, NJ, or MD. But...the time plants like rhodies and redwood are most susceptible to root rot organisms is in the summer. That's when most of those disease organisms grow best...at temps >= 15C. I see redwoods in the native environs growing in soil that appears year round damp, but guess what? It's only going to be inundated with water, during California's wet winters! Likewise with the rhodies that would experience wet (but not underwater, mind you) soil conditions at Greer...only in winter! There's just NO WAY for Eugene to have 3" of hot wet rain in late July, on a single day, as we can have! (or, now that I think about it, at Sonoma Horticultural Nursery, which is called something else these days, the same is true. Although Polo did put some rhodies on the lowest plains of his property in impromptu little raised beds. That might be necessary because he was so mild in winter, root rot organisms could still grow well during the wet season.) Now that a nursery has supposedly grafted Sequoia onto Metasequoia, maybe people in the southeast can plant them in poorly drained soils with abandon. We'll see. * - although, TBH, it wasn't much to see and not even as nice as the peak of NJ Rarefind around the time Hank died in 2009, I'm glad I got to see it in 2011 and meet the famous Mr. Greer. Greer might have had rarer, more tender cultivars in zone 8a, but Rarefind had just more plants, and better displayed, period, in their 6b garden.

Hi Phoebe, I just planted two in the first week of the month. I ordered a 'wonderful' which is supposed to be a great variety for FLA's heat and humidity- but they sent me a 'sweet'. They quickly sent me the right one after I called them and told me to keep the first. So I ended up planting 2. I can't give you lots of advice from experience but I have done a bit of reading. They are self pollinators. I think you get a good amount of fruit from a single happy mature tree- but I imagine that takes a few years unless you drop some serious cash for a big tree. I have read that almost 100% fruit drop is common in the first few years. Mine are tiny little things- only about 36" a piece- and scrawny! I googled "pomegranate tree images" and it was very enlightening to see a score of pictures of what they look like mature. I can't wait to see them bloom- they are supposed to be spectacular. Thanks for thinking of us blfenton and thanks for all the well wishes. In RI here they declared a state of emergency this afternoon. Mandatory evacuations have already been issued. I'm very close to the water and the boats are all backed up waiting their turn to be hauled out of the water. No D batteries or bottled water left anywhere. Not a generator in sight. I don't have a generator but I'm all set with the rest. DD went shopping while I was at school yesterday:) What a great kid. We got kicked out of school early today (students don't start until Wed) so the custodial staff can secure the building. We are having astronomical high tides Sun, just in time for Irene. Storm surges. Flooding. Rip currents. For anyone in the path, I prefer the website www.wunderground.com (weather underground) to the other more commercial weather sites. I did turn on the weather channel but those forecasting nitwits (IMO) are all juiced up about this weather event. I swear it's like weather porn for them! Be safe, be careful, and be prepared! Forget the bread and milk (if your'e from the area you'll know what I mean) opt for the wine and cheese. We're gonna need it.

Not a tree - a shrub, never got too big, maybe because of the salty sand it's growing in. As I said, the plants were neglected;there was little fertilising/pruning, etc. - guessing better cultivation might've made a difference.

After looking @ Park's offerings, thinking it may be the variety 'Wonderful'.

I grew up in Clearwater right around Sunset Point and US 19. There was a pomegranate tree right on the edge of our yard. I'm not sure how long it was the, but I lived in that house for 23 years. I remember it always being there. It produced a ton of fruit. I remember eating many a pomegranate when I was a kid. They can definitely live and thrive in that area.

I have 2. One produces like crazy and the other has never set fruit. (If it doesn't set by next year i'ts OUTTA there!) Anyway- I'll have cuttings when I go to Silvia's. It's one of the few things I know I can bring this time. (See crazy critter post. LOL) These are hardy, easy to care for and require little to no intervention besides trimming after harvest to keep it the size you want it. My oldest bush/tree is aproximately 5 years old and While I got a few fruit the first few years it is giving a good size load of fruit last year and is setting fruit as we speak.

Barbie, I want one cutting, please. Your pomegranates are awesome! Remember the huge and healthy tree that I had? well, after 5 years and no fruit, it went out.

No problem. I will be bringing them for sure! They are super easy to root and this plant has fruited from year 2! :-)

The cutting I got from you last fall failed to root. I hope to get another cutting from you so that I can try again. Is your son coming? It was nice to see some youth at the party.

Yes. He will be coming along as well. He enjoys spending time with me still, so I'm taking full advantage. At 16 I expect any day now he'll not want to 'hang out with mom' ;-)
