best container plant

I have a scraggly areca in a five gallon pot. Areca needs to go, but pot needs to stay as it's helping hold the patio umbrella down. It also helps shade the pot ghetto so tender babies don't get burned up.

So... what's your favorite, easy container plant for full sun? Something with a flower or food would be nice. Oh, and it needs to be able to survive our downpours in the summer. I'll water it in the winter when I hit the rest of the pot ghetto.

Desert rose for easy flower.
Limequat for food. Mine is a small plant but has been giving me fruit all season.

Thanks Kristi, I think with my chinese oranges, I'm good on limey, citrusey fruit. But I hadn't thought of desert rose. They're pretty easy? The desert in the name had me fearing it would be unhappy in the summer downpours.

The container size sounds ok, as long as the soil drains very well & you're careful about not over-watering. The two issues that you'll need to watch for are spider mites - they love the A. spruces, and winter dessication. If the soil freezes they dry out very quickly - especially in containers, so Wilt-Pruf (or equal) or a burlap wrap to slow the wind are good measures to keep in the back of your mind. Al

Hi Laura: As Jacqueline, Tessie, and JeriJen often said: "location, location ...." Tapla's recipe of 5 parts fine mulch, 1 part peat moss, 1 part perlite is best for climate like mine: low-sun, flash flood warning and fast drainage is a must. It is recommended by Douglas Green, an owner of a large Ontario nursery of many plants in pots, including roses. If I use Al's 5-1-1, there is no need to put loose gravels or bark nuggets at the bottom for fast drainage. However, I use super-slow draining MiracleGro in green bag, and medium-slow draining Organic MiracleGro. I skipped this important process of putting loose stuff at the bottom, and regret it terribly. Now I have to dump the soil out of each pot, and start all over. I realize this after a heavy-rain simulation with a hose, with the pot flooding over and loses 1" of soil - which happens every time it rains here! Sure, Field Roebuck said it's not important, just put a paper towel at the bottom of the pot, and fill up with soil. His Texas climate doesn't have the low-sun, and 6" of rain flash flood. Each region should have its own recipe of best potting soil. Now I realize that the regular MiracleGro potting soil (green bag) might have been made for indoor pots, where one puts 1 measly cup of water per week. It's not meant for several outdoor heavy thunderstorms with 4 to 6" of rain per bout like my climate.

I truly can't believe how few options we have with how many exist. I've found some higher quality soil/potting mix products at local Hydroponics stores that blow anything from nurseries out of the water. I don't know why it's impossible to find pine bark fines with pine forests being less than 2 hrs away in multiple directions. Nobody happens to know of anywhere to get them by chance do they? Maybe a few of us should just figure out how to supply much higher quality and much needed products and make some money doing it!!!! Does anyone have any advice for potting mixes to grow sub-tropical fruits in containers or for cherries or citrus? I've only done some citrus in the ground but really want to branch out into some container mango, cherry, banana, and additional citrus.

It varies by species but generally hardy perennials that will be given a cold dormant rest are best repotted in spring immediately prior to budswell. Some plants, like those that bloom in spring on old wood would be repotted after blooms fade. If you want something you don't have to worry about watering, crown of thorns is good and blooms continuously.

Desert rose is a good choice and I also like to grow hybrid hibiscus in pots.

If you want food, grow an eggplant. They're actually nice ornamentals.

Aaaah. I need to get up there Kristi. And this weekend would have been perfect. Shoot. Maybe next weekend. I'm reserving a spot for the geiger in a new bed I'm putting in, slowly, by the pool. And I remember your rock garden, but wasn't paying attention to it in terms of what I should do with mine. I definitely need to see it. It had cactuses and succulents, right? Now that the veggie garden is in, I've got some weekend time until I start the next project - the new bed. I'm saving cardboard for it, and much of the pot ghetto is destined for it. Though the dear boyfriend is less unhappy about the pot ghetto because I thinned it a lot for the swap, and have planted most of what I got at the swap. So there's more space on our little deck finally. Plus, when I got rid of all the tomatoes at the swap, I managed to return the deck table to dinner use. He's sweet, but he kind of wanted the deck back. :)

Treelady, crown of thorns is a good idea. I actually have two pots in need of plants right now, so I might try it in a different spot. I was going to do beans and cucumbers on a trellis, and even bought a cute trellis, but I'm out of beans. I'm actually thinking of planting some black-eyed peas I got at the grocery store. Wonder if they'd come up?

And Mini, I've never had good luck with hibiscus. Always seems to get aphids. But I should put in some eggplant. I've actually been thinking of putting something edible in the front yard, something pretty. Eggplant's a good idea.
