Plant Containers Head Into Quirky Territory
From the whimsical to the odd, sculptural vases and planters add fun to indoor-outdoor decor
Decorating that falls on the whimsical side of style is definitely my speed. I currently have a little love affair with quirky sculptural vessels. You can find many versions of head planters, and all kinds of fun animal- and automobile-shaped vessels for plants and flowers, too. Here's a peek at the quirkier side of houseplants.

Porcelain baby doll head planter
There's something a little creepy but totally cool about these dollface head planters. I love the choice in plants, too.
My mom has always had a green thumb, so last Christmas I treated her to a special planter for her kitchen. The lady head sculpture has space up top for a few little succulents. The green sprouts look like a funky headpiece.
TIP: For a chic alternative to a plastic spray bottle, try a vintage perfume bottle to spritz your plants with water. My mom regularly spritzes the succulents in her lady head here — it's an easy way to water the plants without over-watering their little root system.

Add a little whimsy to your backyard garden with a pair of mounted head planters. Succulents, cacti and air plants are great options for thanks to their headdress-like shapes and low water needs.
Lady head planter
Here's a traditional example of the lady head sculpture. It's fun to choose plants that spill over the edges, mimicking the look of hair.
In my home office, I have a scupltural clay head planter (I call Mr. Brain), which I scored from the local shop Graceful Gardens. I love how the planted cactus inside looks so much like a brain.
Head vases
Jonathan Adler knows how to do fun. These male and female white ceramic head vases would look amazing with a bright mix of flowers from the market or a couple of green succulents.
Camper vase
I'd love to gift this camper vessel to a few old college friends to remember our glory days of roadtripping together.
TIP: To keep fresh cut flowers looking alive longer, change the vessel's water on a daily basis and trim the stems on an angle.

Air plant in giraffe planter
How cute would this giraffe planter be in a kid's room? This plastic toy giraffe has the perfect spot to grow an air plant or mini succulent.
Upcycled blue elephant toy planter
While this elephant would be right at home in your kiddo's room, I know a few grownups who would love this funky planter, too.
Bird vases
Modern meets whimsical when flowers pop out of these penguins' heads.
