reusing lids in freezer, old jars

liv2learn

I have been using new canning jars to freeze sauce, salsa and pickles. I want to reuse those jars, plus some jars/lids used for refrigerator pickles. I assumed it was safe to reuse lids that had only been used in the refrigerator or freezer, not for canning. Is that correct? I put the lids in the dishwasher with the bands and jars. Do I need to use fresh lids for the freezer?

Also, I received some free canning jars and I want to use them for something, but I am worried about using them for food (especially liquids) since I don't know what was in them before. Is boiling water sterilization sufficient, or bleach? Or should I sterilize them and use them only for dry things like dried beans, herbs or flowers?
