Good Grief! More Spikes?

Yesterday it was Midici Palace and two on Blueberry Breakfast. Today it's Lava Flow...poor Octoberfest started it, and it got as a little cool so it didn't open very well (first time for that). Donna Jack has a spike, and so does Man of Sorrows, and a NOID has a nice big healty appearing spike.

I know you told me it isn't unusual for you Debra, but this is my first ever October for anything other than a new Bill Maryott plant to put up a spike. Oh yeah, I pinched off the one Emerald Starburst put up (too new a plant).

My first bloom was May 2nd, so this seems like an awful long time to be getting any bloom spikes to me. Not that I don't want them understand...but I don't understand it. Maybe the rain (you know, the one we finally got) confused them. I'll try to post a couple of pics if they bloom tomorrow.

Yay thats great!! I only have one rebloom scape coming up but sooo wish it were more. Maybe next year!! Judy

Oooh, I hate seeing crunchy or limp foliage, especially after that Easter freeze of 06, my Japanese maples are still trying to recover, and I lost so many roses to canker, I'm still digging them out after they limped along. Hopefully this was a short enough bout to just damage some early growth and that it was just a blip on the weather radar. I think I'm getting numb to weird weather. I used to worry about it a lot more when we lived in Indiana, tornado alley. I had my weather radio at the ready and the basement was stocked with supplies. Saturday night apparently we had tornado warnings, the sky turned yellow and then we had some severe thunderstorms that struck very close by. The dog went under the bed while I was watching a movie on DVD. My daughter was at the mall with some friends and told me the next day that they herded everyone into the tornado shelters. She just wanted to stay in the food court, not worried even after she saw the weird sky. Like mother like daughter?

We are currently remodeling part of our home. As such, the entire contents of our kitchen, dining room and my home office are in cardboard boxes stacked halfway to the roof in one half of our garage. The other half of the garage, front to back, is stacked with our new kitchen cabinets ready to be installed on Monday. Last night the wind was strong and the rain came down fairly hard. Hard enough to cause our atrium to flood, which in turn seeped water into the back half of the garage. The rain must have been blowing toward our house as the front of our garage floor was wet as well. How that happens with a fairly new metal, roll-up door with weather stripping, we don't know. All we know is that a few soon to be installed drawers and upper cabinets got wet and swelled, as did the shelves of our very nice 12' bookcase and a few bottom cardboard boxes (which are supporting several others) got wet enough to start to buckle. As you can imagine, we had to do a lot of shifting and rearranging this morning and will have to see what the contractor says about the damaged cupboards on Monday morning. Well, here it's raining. In the 40s tomorrow, then down to 17 tomorrow night, so I'm assuming it'll be slick. This was a couple of years ago, we can pile up some pretty impressive snow but we have experience and equipment, so we're good at moving snow and getting around in it. That's our old truck, a full size Chevy Silverado with a "crew" cab. The problem with putting oil on the weatherstripping of the doors is that if you then rub against it while getting in or out, you get oily spots on your clothes. (yeah, ask me how I know) WD 40 and PAM both work too, but can degrade the rubber weather stripping. Rubber conditioner is really best if you want to treat the rubber weather stripping. My problem is that water gets into the locks themselves and then I'm heating my key, or using Lock-Ease. The Enclave does have heated seats, and I have a garage, so I can start the car, turn on the seats, go inside and have a cup of coffee and then leave after the car warms up nicely. It also has all wheel drive to get me though most of the navigable stuff and the old farm truck is 4 wheel drive, of course so we're pretty prepared, usually. So we're enjoying the break, but it'll only last until tomorrow, then it's back to normal Michigan winter, it looks like the 20s in the day and single digits at night for another month or so. Annie

Yes, you can make starter with grapes. Or whole grain. Or any number of things. Wild yeast is on them. It's all the same kind of yeast. The bread doesn't have to taste different if you use wild yeast (sourdough starter), unless you're trying for a yeasty taste. Commercial yeast is a different strain than wild. Regular bread will taste the same if you make it right. The real issue with using wild yeast is that the method is different and it takes a lot longer, and getting a good rise out of a new starter isn't guaranteed. All over the 'net, however, all kinds of people (especially young ones) are catching yeast and baking breads both sour and not from it.

It is a first rebloom for Lava Flow, and I am not sure about the NOID, but the others had all rebloomed at least once already. It's been a very surprising year...I wonder just what went into it...rainfall, (not much) heat (too much but nothing like Texas and Oklahoma...but there was an unusual somewhat early cold snap.) The springtime organic fertilizers may have helped, but I don't believe it alone could have been responsible for such a rebloom year as this.

kay, just injoy them blooms,and be grateful that your plants sont want to stop putting up blooms.I think its great. eish all of mine would do that.I have 2 moew busa yet to opem on PANDORA'S TREsure/

Kay, your daylilies are amazing. They sure did like this year and you sure have been doing everything right. I hope they get a chance to bloom.

Hi Rita! I've been missing you. I didn't post pictures today, but Man of Sorrows and Midici Palace both opened properly today. I'm down to just shaking my head when I see a bloom spike...don't understand it at all. I too hope these, especially Hot Lava and Blueberry Breakfast, get to bloom.

It is perfect weather to work outside these days, and I've been doing some work. I discovered that my newest garden addition slopes more than I realized. I had to dig my good amended dirt out from under that shed (can you say "awkward"?) I am laying a row of concrete blocks there to maintain the soil, but I think I will need to terrace about halfway between them and the little fencethe little fence. At least I discovered the problem, and the weather is perfect for working.
