ccaggiano: More power to you. And look at the savings! Food is going up every time I go grocery shopping. Yesterday cukes were .89 cents each. Five small pickling cukes in a package were $3.65!!!!!! I almost went into shock.

ccaggiano, Oh how I envy you. We only have some vegetable stands around here and the sticker shock is worse there than it is at the grocery store.

I wish I could find some cheap corn. I have never bought anything by bushel. If you don't mind saying, what does a bushel go for?

We are proud of you also. We've been there and understand your joy.

A bag of corn is 5 dozen. You know, the green mesh bag. The price at our Farmers Market is $20.00. 5 dozen can be heaped into a bushel basket. If you're buying one dozen, the cost is $5.00.

Here a supermarket has 10 ears for $2.00 I used to recall it was a buck a dozen. Next year, I'll be growing mostly corn for the freezer.

The cheapest here is 6 for $1.98. That is at the supermarket, but they buy from a local farmer. Sure would like to cut out the middle man!

never-give-up.. The bushel of tomatoes (about 50 lbs) was $26. I posted that same question in another thread and some people were paying as little as $13 for a bushel. In a few weeks, they have pick your own tomatoes, peppers and eggplants for $24 a bushel. I figured I'd send my 5 & 3 year olds out in to the fields and save a few dollars :-)

ccaggiano, you are a bona fide Food Preserver now, and there will be no stopping you!

I pop tomatoes in the freezer whole & raw when they are coming in too fast and furious. Some I can later, but a few bags of frozen ones I save and can throw a whole tomato or two into a stew, etc. in the winter.

You'll be very glad to have all that summer taste available in the cold weather. Good for you!
