I would like to meet up with other gardeners! I feel very alone trying to grow veggies in Miami.

I've been having computer trouble so it's taken me a while to get back here and say "I'm in!"
I can't ever remember a meet in Miami.

Well three is a group. That is a start. I will wait and see if a couple more reply and then we will figure out a date.

Growing veggies here feels very lonely here too. Most of my neighbors must think I am crazy. It does not help that I have terrible allergies and hayfever and try and wear long pants and sleeves, scarves and hats in 90 degree weather.. I cannot wait for cooler weather. I can only last 1/2 an hour out and I am drenched in sweat and have to go in and change my clothes.

There must be more gardeners in the neighborhood though. I have seen a couple of veggies beds when I biked around my neighborhood in Spring.

I would love to meet other veggie gardeners. I am two steps outside Coral Gables - near University of Miami. I lurk the GW every day. Just say when and where.

I'll bring Trini but I really don't grow veggies. I can bring my Master Gardener books for you to look over for info, though.

Well I try to grow veggies and I am all alone here in zone 10 A land. :) I know it can be done but now the early freeze date has been move up to the first week on Dec for me . So if it can't produce in 60 days or less , I don't think I am going to fool around with a fall veggie garden anymore . I am going to try some lettuce and spinish this year. I took a class on veggie growing a few years ago at mounts , but they were mainly looking to recruiting volunteers for community gardens. I don't have the time right now.

I am counting six. And coffeemom I am sure we can talk about something else beside veggies. I don't know about you but my garden (and the neighbors') has been hit by spiraling white fly. It is totally attacking palms and banana trees but it has many host including vegetables. It is supposedly traveled from the Carribean, reached Australia in 2006 and South Florida last year and is starting to be a serious problem (right at the heal of the ficus/whitefly infestation).

Shall we wait a bit to see if more reply or shall we set a date? Once we have a date I can try and recruit a couple of people in my neighborhood whom I have seen growing veggies/gardners.

I live in Plantation, outside of Fort Lauderdale, but I don't mind the drive and would love to meet other gardeners around here. I am new to gardening, so I really have nothing to offer by way of seeds or advice, but I'd love to be involved anyway. I'd love to just sit and visit with others with the same interests. If I'm not babysitting my grandson on the day you all meet, count me in.

If you haven't scheduled yet, maybe I can hook up with Justine? I can drive (live in Fort Lauderdale), or help with gas money. I too don't grow food, just an occasional Cuban oregano and a re-cycled pineapple top planted in a pot, ha.

I'd love to catch up with those I've not seen in awhile and meet those I've never met.

Sorry I have been slow getting back to you (hubby was ill then had to travel). We have a nice group for a gathering and here are my suggestions, please tell me which you prefer and I will set it up:

Date: How about Saturday the 22nd or Sunday the 23rd? Can you tell me which you prefer?

Place: My recommendation is to meet at the Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden. They have the Edible Garden Festival that weekend and have lots of talks and hands on workshops on gardening all for the price of the admission. I also have a membership and could invite three of you for free. They also have lots of great activities for kids (for the parents and grandparents) and food vendors and plants for sale.

Time: We could meet at 9a.m. at the door. The Garden opens at 9:30 and the talks start at 10a.m.. I put a link for details and copied and pasted the program below.

Details: Bring a hat and something to sit on if you do not want to sit in the grass.

Hopefully this plan will suit most of you if not I will propose an alternative or a second meeting for those who cannot make it.

Although the event at Fairchild is excellent, I thought the idea was to get to know each other. That won't happen with all the goings on.

Not wanting to step on toes here but I'm willing to host a get together. I'm about halfway between everyone who's responded and besides I'm newly retired!!!!!!
If you want to do it before the holidays, I'm available Sat 11/12or Sun11/13 unless that is a mini vaca weekend because of Vets day. I could do 10/30 but that's the day before Halloween and don't want to stress out the mom's(just bring chocolate)Or the 3rd weekend in Nov.

I would love to meet up at your place! I live in Plantation. There is a lady that offered free manure on this site a few weeks back. She isn't a gardener (yet), but she may be interested in joining in. I am new to the whole thing and have more to ask than more to offer, but I can bring something to eat or whatever we need, just let me know. I am available on all mentioned dates. I will have to arrange for my daughter to be home to watch my grandson if we meet on the 12 or 13 Nov. so I'll need just a little advance notice.

I am going to try to attend the garden events in Miami as well, but am not certain which day, as I foster kittens and I have to be at an adoption event one of those days next weekend. But, it's a marvelous idea and thank you for sharing the information.

Justine, I'd love to meet up. One thing tho-if they do the Fairchild Gardens option, I wouldn't be able to go. It's more walking/standing than I can manage, and Idon't own a wheelchair, lol. If you get the chance, by all means, go. I have longed to go to Fairchild, but it's just not possible. If we end up meeting at someone's home for a swap, I would love to do that.

Justine, do you foster kittens through a rescue or on your own? I'd love to do that, but not able to. We had one rescue kitty this past Summer, and loved her so much, we ended up adopting her!

I foster through Animal Aid. It's a no kill rescue here in Broward/Palm Beach Co.

If you go to their web site and click on available cats, you can see my 4 foster kitties. They are Ana, Gamon, Moira, and Arthas. (My daughter named them:))

I also volunteer once a week at Petco in Plantation, where I go in and clean the cages, love on the cats for a while, and make sure they are all well. You are welcome to come and sit with the cats and visit while I clean if you ever feel up to it. I go in on Thursday nights about 6.

If you decide you'd like to join up to go to the gardens, let me know. I'd be glad to push you around if you needed.

Hopefully, we'll get a chance before too long to hook up and hang out with some other fellow gardening enthusiasts. If not, we'll make some time. I DO SO LOVE a good cup o joe and a good company. We'll make it work for us Broward-ites!

I just looked closer at the Fairchild Gardens site, and they do have wheelchairs for loan, first come first served. I am so tempted, if I had a 'pusher', lol. But I just hate to impose on anybody; I can stand and walk a fair amount, but once the pain sets in, I'm done. I tried to email you through GW, but didn't find a link to do so.

I don't know why, but it seems everything happens at once. I have roofers coming over Thursday/Friday, and I can't see them finishing on time to let me go on Saturday. I have another commitment on Sunday. We'll see what happens.

Justine - Just looked at your foster kitties; they are beautiful! Looks like they are thriving, beautiful coats too. Ah, but I'm all full up.....

Not stepping on my toes or anything. That is very kind of you to host a gathering. I am happy to go once but my schedule would not allow to go regularly which is fine. Sunday November 13 would work for me. I am in general not fussy about location and suggested the event at Fairchild because I think of it as a gardener's dream:-) or maybe I should say this gardener's dream (I was there last year and the year before).

If you are still willing how about we organize two outings (since I am going anyway to Fairchild).

This Sunday at Fairchild. Tell me you will be there and I will wait for you at the door. Again I can take in three with me free on my membership. There are wheelchairs to loan there and even though they stop the shuttle on events days, they have little electric carts they use to transport those who need them from the door to the main gathering area. Once you are there it is very compact and there is not lots of walking. They have a picnic area where we can meet, sit and chat. But you need to let me know.

The rain has delayed the roofers. Saturday is now open. Where/what time do we meet and how do we recognize each other?

Crap! Forgot all about this. We got caught up last week with our community garage sale.

I would still love to get together but how about after the holidays? There's nothing going on in late Jan/early Feb. and if we have the warm winter we're supposed to have it should be perfect. I promise to post early and give everyone plenty of time to arrange stuff.
