10 Amazing Houses from 10 Major U.S. Cities
I recently went on a historic walking tour where we explored the mansions of San Francisco. It was neat to take a look at the exteriors of the homes and to try to pinpoint what I loved about them and what I could do without. There are many different architectural styles to see in San Francisco but there's something distinctly San Francisco about a home that is built here.
This all got me curious about which homes I might like in other major cities in the United States. I have traveled all throughout this country and I have a good sense of the feeling that is evoked for me in each place. I'm curious about the homes that would reflect that feeling.
Here we've got one home from each of ten major U.S. cities: San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, Phoenix, Seattle, Miami, New Orleans, Atlanta and Austin. Each of these homes struck a chord with me and I hope you like them too!

I don't think there is a house in San Francisco that I don't like but this one takes the cake for me. It's a huge home in a city where big houses are rare. It's got neat modern touches like an aluminum roof. The chimney hints that there is a fireplace inside which is always a plus for me. And of course it has this lovely view of the San Francisco Bay.
This is a Los Angeles home. Size isn't quite as impressive in LA as it is in San Francisco since many homes in this city are huge. Still, the size here does make you look twice. Beyond that, I really love the modern appeal of the exterior of the home. It's like a sculpture that you can live inside of.
This is a New York home. I think what I love about it is the fact that it's totally modern but it's not your typical Manhattan high-rise home. Plus I'm a sucker for round rooms and lots of windows!
Here's a home from Chicago. It's not what I would typically think of when I think about Chicago but that's precisely why it caught my attention. I love the fact that it's simple but has a lot of small detail at the same time. And I love the brick exterior of the basement.
What can I say ... is there any way not to be awed by this amazing Phoenix home? It's huge. It's beautiful. And it has a lot of outdoor garden space where you could easily enjoy Arizona's many nice warm evenings.
This house is located outside of Seattle. I think of Seattle as a great city where you can have a lot of fun but also a smallish city where you might just go for a retreat. If you lived there, you could retreat further to a neat little space like this one that gives you a country feel. Plus, there's a wine cellar in that lookout tower which is just cool!
Ah, I adore this Miami home. It just has this nice feeling of being a rich and luxurious space inside of a city where there is a lot of activity but also ample opportunity for relaxation. I don't have a car myself but if I lived in a space like this then I'm sure I'd appreciate that three-car garage!
Ah, New Orleans. This home looks like it has tall ceilings and grand rooms. It has a bith of Southern charm. And it also has a little hint of haunted eerieness which I think is appropriate for homes in this cemetary-laden city. Spooky but pretty. I like it.
What a great Atlanta home. This seems to take all of the spectacular touches of a Civil War era home and update them to create a more modern residence. There are columns and staircases and huge windows but nothing that's been overdone. It's a little bit Gone with the Wind and a little bit something that could be here to stay for awhile.
There are a lot of great homes in Austin and all of the best ones allow you to take advantage of the many days of sunshine offered up in this city. There's no denying that the main reason this house is my favorite one in Austin is because of that amazing pool!
