Late bloomer beds on Tuesday.

Well, I actually took this picture yesterday afternoon before I planted the rest of my TB iris.

I thought everyone might want to see the late bloomers bed that I have going along the back of the new garden. Did this by moving many of the Hibbard intros over this spring. Also some other lates I had elsewhere. As you look down you just see the edge of the newly created Tall Bearded Iris bed at the right. And you are looking back towards the serviceberries were many of the Thomas late bloomers are planted along in the front row of that. Then at the very back you see the tall one on the left is BLAST FROM THE PAST (just under the birdhouse) with TREE TURTLES just to the right of that.

OLALLIELAND is just to the left accross the grass path of the Hibbardville bed. You can just see a daylily bloom from Olallieland sneeking in the picture. So lots of late blooming going on here.

After Olallieland along that left side is my blueberry bed with lots and lots of blueberry shrubs. I love blueberries, yumm!

Here is a closeup of BLAST FROM THE PAST. This daylily is TALL. In fact it is my tallest daylily. This is the first time it has bloomed for me, in three years I had had it. I only kept it because its a late bloomer but now I am glad that I did.

Here we are looking accross the TB iris bed before I finished it with the rest of the iris yesterday.

The daylilies shown at the very front are new regular season bloomers I bought this spring. Then I have a long narrow gardenbed there between the daylilies and the iris that I plan to have in summer annuals to give season long color from now on. I don't have it done this year yet as I only made this entire thing starting this spring so took me awhile. Also there is room at the very back of the regular daylilies and before the long annual bed for adding bulbs or lilies or both.

These are great views of your beds, Rita. You certainly seem to have everything organized very well and I know it is a lot of hard work and planning. Something I still have a long way to go on. I love your bed names!

My sister loves blueberries too and just got some small starts about two years ago. She said hers will take a couple more years to bear much fruit although she got a few berries this year. I don't know anything about them, but that seems like a long time to wait for blueberries.

Rita, I love Blast from The Past. I'm afraid it would be to tall for me though since I really get a lot of wind here and some of my tall but not SO tall ones have to be staked sometimes. Especially those with weak scapes. You bed ( both of them ) look great. You still have some beauties blooming and the TB Iris bed is going to be fantastic...Ellie

You could start your fall garden seeds indoors now to be ready for planting out in a month or so. I have brussell sprouts, broccoli, cauliflower, and cabbage seedlings growing under lights now, to be planted out in July/Aug. I also plant the fall carrot crop in early July. I sow the seed a little deeper (to get the seeds down to the moisture, which is deeper in the summer) and then keep them covered with wetted burlap until they sprout, and then keep them under row covers for a few weeks. I also wait until July to seed my pumpkins (so they are ready for Halloween). I save my tuna cans to use as collars as protection against SVBs. And cow peas (black eyed peas) can be planted just about any time. I use them as a cheap cover crop between plantings. I buy them at the grocery store for $1.50 or less per bag. If you give your plants some shade early in their lives, you can still plant just about anything that matures in less than 120 days. We don't usually get frost here in the Charlotte area until mid to late Oct.

Rita, When are you going to rest.You just keep on digging and planting. but,Its fun, ain't it to plant flowers all over the place.Your beds are looking really nice, too and the late bloomers are so pretty..I like that great big SUNFLOWER you have back there, too.I love Sunflowers.So do the squirrels around here.They usually have them ate up before the seeds get mature.. Ruth and Pam, after re-reading your post, Pam, and seeing you got the penstemon from JoAn, I did a research on Brazos and Gulf Coast penstemon and find they must be the same...............can anyone verify this for me?? I became interested because the penstemon I have came from a brug cutting event when JoAn brought seeds to share, and someone must have lost part of theirs by my back gate because many of the penstemon plants came up there. When I posted to ask about it, it was identified as Brazos Penstemon................

I just kept adding blueberry shrubs that I mostly bought mail order for years until I had enough. Now the birds have plenty to feast on (and they do) plus I have plenty to eat myself.

I do have a tendency to name my gardenbeds if a name sticks in my mind. Like Olallieland, Florabundaville and so on.

This garden pictured above really was very thought out before anything was planted. In the very front you might be able to see some of the row of Portulacas. Along there I plan to plant Tulips this fall (already ordered). Daffodils will go in the two paths in between those front daylilies and along in back of the iris and in front of those late bloomers. Then I really want DUTCH IRIS. I hope they will be winter hardy for me but we will see. This fall I am going to put them up there in front of that to be annuals section. I want a sucession of color up there.

Ellie- I actually don't really want them anywhere near that tall. Both BLAST and TREE TURTLES are truely too tall to be perfect in my opinion but I am much more flexable with my requirements for true late bloomers than for regular season stuff. If its too tall regular season, I just don't buy it.

It's great to see that much color. Grouping them together certainly has more impact. My late bloomers bed was looking quite bare today. Only Royal Jester still has buds. But Amber Finale and Royal Jester both have rebloom scapes coming, and I'm hoping a couple of the others there will rebloom.

The only late bloomer I can think of off hand that I have that reblooms is FINAL DESTINATION.

Rita - Who knew Amber Finale could rebloom? I've had it for five or six years and this is the first time it's ever put up a rebloom scape. Maybe it will rebloom for you, too.
