Yes, and I'd get some grasses in their too, like sideoats grama or little bluestem -- they'll help keep the soil a little cooler. I'd also look at sky blue aster and aromatic aster.

Wonderful... I did have the sideoats grama in mind, maybe purple prairie clover? Seems in other settings the bluestem hasn't been as hardy as I've hoped. I'm very interested in bringing some native color into a rather ragged urban setting. I have some asters (Blue Skies and Lady in Black?) in the small yard, my strip might be a bit narrow for their bushiness?
