get together in Central Florida

We're having a get together at Biosphere nursery on Sunday, July 10 at 10 AM. We will be trading butterfly and hummingbird plants, cuttings, cats, seeds and more.

Jim Thomas, owner of Biosphere, will be there to answer questions and educate us. The nursery will provide drinks and discounts off plants.

Hi, Tom...sorry to have to tell ya, but July 10 is a Tuesday. (I know this only because I will be in San Diego at my daughter's wedding on Monday July 9.) Could you clarify the date for us again, please??? Thanks!!

Right, it's July 8. Sorry. Actually, Biosphere helped mess me up. In their newsletter it was headed the 10th, but later on they said it was the 8th.

It is Sunday the 8th at 10 AM.

Again, sorry for the confusion. So we won't see you, Marcia? You will be packing and stuff?

alisande - please come if you can. This is all so new to me. I have been addicted to the kitchen forum during our re-hab (a very long story) but during that time, I would lurk at KT and I am excited about meeting some KT folks. ANY time is good for me - I'll MAKE time!!! Meeting place depends on what you're up for - we can meet at the beach and have a picnic (there's covered picnic benches there, from what I remember), or there's a GREAT place on US1 called Harry and the Natives - very inexpensive and VERY VERY good food - up to ya'll (and Marion!). I'm so looking forward to this!!! Central Florida- getting rid of weeds where no grass to put mulch/ston

No one can keep "weeds", unwanted plants, from growing mostly because Ma Nature does not like her soil left uncovered and exposed to the ravages of the sun, wind, and rain. "Weed barriers" can stop "weeds" from growing from the soil, but they will not stop newly seeded unwanted plants from germinating and growing and since those seeds come onto your property via birds, the wind, and wild animals you will have a difficult time stopping that process. Mulches, properly applied, can help with unwanted plant control but are not the total means of control some would tell you because mulches may provide a good bed for those plants to germinate and grow in. In a discussion about mulches with someone yesterday I told them that materials such as wood chips are quite dense and would block unwanted plant growth if laid down at 3 to 4 inches rather than the 6 to 8 inched something like straw would require. However this person will be getting many bales of straw, free, so what to use is not in question. An article in an issue of Fine Gardening magazine on the results of a 9 year study of mulches by two researchers at Michigan State University would be worthwhile looking up at your library. kimmq is kimmsr

Darn it...I will already be in San Diego, Tom. We are flying out on the 6th and staying for a week. Mark has never been, and I want to take him to the desert before we come back. The Anza Borrega desert is spectacular and filled with interesting plants and birds. Also, I think he would enjoy seeing La Jolla...the prettiest beach I've ever seen in my life. So we are making a vacation out of it.

Since my daughter & hubby won't be leaving on their honeymoon for two weeks, they will take us around after the wedding. I can't wait! Don't know if you remember the photos I took last year of the ranunculus at the Flower Fields, but they were just amazing. Lots to see out there.

Hope y'all have a wonderful time! Biosphere is always such fun!! I haven't even seen their new butterfly stuff.

Tom - I have to tell you that you inspired me with your vines growing up in your trees! I have a bleeding heart enchanted with a large crape myrtle and a passionvine developing an intimate relationship with a palm. I introduced a cardinal climber to another crape myrtle but apparently they are a little shy with each other and still developing their life plan.

I will be there! A quick / dumb question. What are "cats" in your list of things we will trade?

Also - strictly butterfly / hummingbird plants or if I have other things should I bring them too?

Yep, "cats" are caterpillars, Anita.

Bring along whatever you have to trade or give away. There will be takers for sure. I'll probably have some goldrim (Polydamas) cats to share. I haven't had time to start any plants this year.
