propane burner for outdoor canning

I am looking at propane burners so I can move most of my canning outdoors this summer.
I have searched the forum and not found recommendations of what brand and type you like to use. I apologize if it is talked about somewhere and I couldn't find it!
I would appreciate advice before I make a purchase.
What diameter burner works best (for both BWB and Pressure canning), BTU, material (cast iron, stainless), etc.

Many options so do you have a price range in mind? Need single or double burner? With legs/stand or for tabletop use? Already have the propane tanks and regulators or will have to buy separately?

This is the one I use. It is also available as a single burner (I started with it) for about $40.

I use the 2-burner in the link.
Works great. As a Master Food Preserver I help teach a tuna canning class outdoors in the fall and we've had 9 of these and 18 pressure canners going all at once.

Definitely something to see, hear, and smell!

My experience has been completely the opposite..... I hated canning outside! and there is no amount of money that could intice me to do it again. Maybe it was my burner, maybe it was the location or maybe it was just me, but it was awful. First I tried putting everything together in the kitchen and then just bringing a filled canner outside. Besides the safety risks of transporting a heavy hot pot, I had to sit outside and watch it like a hawk. It took forever for the water to boil (like 45 min) and the wind(I guess) made regulating the pressure a nightmare. I was regulating the flame every 2 min. even after moving to an enclosed area (3 walls and a roof). Never could get any reading done. After fighting with the gauge for 2+ hours then coming back inside, all the pots and pans still needed to be cleaned up. So then I tried moving the whole canning operation outside. What a pain. I only had the one burner and a regular gas grill. So there was a lack of heat sources. Then, it was hard to keep everything clean, bugs and leaves would fall into a pot of jelly (no trees in my back yard!) No water source, lugging all the supplies back and forth. Couldn't keep the pots from getting sooty and eventhough I soaped them first, I always managed to get soot all over me before it was through. I canned this way for an entire year. It was the same year we had 47 days in a row of 100+ temps (that's not heat index). It is my only bad memory of living in TX. My mom on the other hand will do large batches outside on old coleman camp stoves setup on picnic tables. Never had a problem, has even had 7 canners going at once. Maybe canning outside is something I am just not meant to do. Tanya

Hi what did you come up with as a high powered burner? how many btu's? I saw one at lowes, it kicks out 21,000 btu's, i was thinking of getting it for wok cooking, Its about $110. its a single stand alone burner with a swing open top and controls in front. JerryMB

GE Cafe range owners with propane: adequate burners?

I own this range and recommend AGAINST buying it. I've been very disappointed. I know this thread is old, but I wanted to mention I have had a problem with my front right burner similar to the problem described by thomas_2008. Mine is not on LP. All the burners work fine, except for the front right burner. The front right one adjusts from high flame down to almost nothing as you turn the knob from Hi to about 7. Then from 7 down to low, there is virtually no adjustment at all --- just extremely low all the way. I had the valve replaced under warantee and it still works exactly the same way. Since then GE has insisted that this feature is "by design," although they can give no rationale for why it would have been designed this way. They refuse to do anything more. They told me if I call for another warrantee service call for this same porblem, they will not replace the valve, but instead they will charge me for the service call for "customer education." I've escalated the issue several levels and they all insist that this is "by design," so if that is true, and you decide to buy one of these ranges you can be guaranteed it will work exactly as I described --- no heat adjustment from Lo through 7, and then a big jump between 7 and Hi --- according to GE that ia how it works "by design," so presumably they all work the same way. If you could live with that feature, then otherwise the range is great and you might consider it; however, I have to warn you that my experience with the Warrantee Service department and Customer Relations department were horrible. For that reason I would recommend against any GE products at this point. I know I'm not going to buy any in the future unless this range issue gets resolved.

I don't think it is the burner's problem and I don't think it's dirty propane either. I think all propane burners use a mix of air and propane. The mixing is done based on the aerodynamic principle of "Venturi" effect. In order for the Venturi effect to take place, the propane pressure has to be high enough and the needle valve has to be the right size to create the velocity to draw in outside air thru the adjustable ports for the mixing. Too much air the flame can go out, too little air you get soot (incomplete combustion). I understand you said you had replaced the regulator. So try adjusting the regulator, the air intake ports until you get a nice blue flame. Also try cleaning the mixing path. Lot's of times you can find dead insects or other dirt blocking the path. Post a picture can help me point to other potential problems. dcarch

Thank you Dave and Deanna for you input and links. I see that both of you use a two burner (each 35,000 BTU burners). I have looked at several that were 15,000 BTU and were quite a bit cheaper, but didn't know if those would be able to do the job. I don't want to get something that is not going to function the way I need it to. I am thinking I will not need a stand and will use it on a table. I already have one tank and regulator. I am debating whether to go single or double burner. I think double would be best. The base of my BWB canner is about 13" in diameter. Price range - well I was hoping for under $50, but looks like I'll have to spend a bit more.

Keep in mind that 12,000 BTUs is the max recommended for most all the pressure canners. So even though ours have more BTUs we don't use them at full power ever. Both Deanna's and my model have infinte control settings and that is what is important. That is the issue with many of the fish fryer burners for sale - very limited flame control.

The single burner that I started with, the $40 one at the same link I posted above is basically the diameter of my Presto 23 qt canner - fits perfectly. It also has infinite controls plus 3 separate burners in the ring for even more control. I was quite happy with it and only moved up to the double so I could have 2 PCs going at the same time.

But with it you will need to purchase the regular separately for another $12-15. And you will need some sort of heat shield for underneath it for the table top.

Dave - Thanks so much for the insight. This information is going to be very helpful. I am going to do a bit of checking at our farm supply stores and see if what they have is comparable in quality and price. I think a single burner like you started with would be a great one for what I need. Good price, well made, etc. I think that I will really like moving the canning outdoors, but I guess that still remains to be seen!
