Problem grinding my own Cornmeal

Not sure if I should post here or in the Cooking Forum, but I know Grainlady replies here on occassion. I grew dent corn this past year for grinding. Purchased an older Universal Grain Mill, all steel, no plastic, metal grinding burrs. It works fine, I'm still figuring out the best way to get coarse / fine grinds. My question is when I have the final meal, there is what I would call chaff mixed in with it. It seems that there is a little of the chaff from the cob sticking to the base of each kernel when I grind. It doesn't grind up, just sort of stays on top of the meal.

I hand shelled the corn because I have no other way of doing this. Is there some way that I can mechanically remove this chaff before I grind? I have looked in old threads and have not seen this problem adressed. The corn is well dried and grinds nicely. Should I parch the corn first? I have been screening the fine grind and this removes it, but with a coarser grind it is right there with the meal that I want to use.

Any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Steve
