No all the "special" size jars are no longer in production - unfortunately for some of us. It has just been standard, common size production for several years but quarts do come in wide or regular mouth sizes.

Whether this particular one will fit standard wide mouth lids or not I can't say. You'll just have to try them.

Yes, Ball which is also Kerr, and Golden Harvest all have only the common types used today. 4, 8, 12, 16, and 32 ounce jars, then a big half gallon which is wide mouth only, and cannot be used for heat processed home canning due to its large size. They do, howeevr work well for fermented pickles and half sours. You may be able to find older 'antique' jars on eBay. I usually see green tinted ones and several odd sizes like a 24 ounce wide mouth. These are expensive today as they are not as common and are not made anymore.

Are 'Ball, Kerr, and Golden Harvest' all the same company?

When did the HD special jars go out of production? They were really nice.

Ball bought Kerr about 15-20 years ago, and then started to market the Golden Harvest jars about 7 years ago, for those who want to pay slightly less for the the generic brand. I don't know about HD jars, but there were many makers of all glass jars with wire bails and glass domed lids. These used a rubber ring for the seal. Only problem, you can't tell if they are under vacuum or not once processed. Today, no one should be using the all glass bail wire types anymore. The addition of the small embossed 'dimple' at the center of the metal lids was first introduced by Kerr many years ago. They used to call it the 'Magic Button'. The dimple goes concave once there is a vacuum inside the sealed jars. The ever familar 'plink' sound is heard while cooling. Even though home canning has increased a little in recent years, the makers of these jars have not expanded their product lines. With Ball as the only maker still in the US, we are at the mercy of their designs and marketing ploys. In Canada, they are known as Bernardin. In England and New Zealand, there is a Foster brand.

Yes, as Ken said, all are the same company - Jarden through acquisition over the years- and the brands are just different levels. Though Kerr has pretty much disappeared - in this part of the country anyway.

As to when - many, many years back - prior to the 2 part lids. Best guess, 30 years plus and likely longer. The one we all really miss is the old 1 1/2 pint jars but they won't bring them back - we've tried. ;)
