possible squirrel solution

Having lost many fruit- mango, avacado, macadamia nuts etc - to these rats who take a single bite and move on . I am trying a new technique. There is a bromeliad in my back yard with hooked thorns that grows like a weed and flowers once with a bright red center . I cut the leaves about 18 " long and using small thin nails , nail them to my trees. Just cutting them usually leaves me with profuse bleeding all over my arms . This seems to have the added benefit for my mango of inducing a second bloom . I am now sitting back dreaming of their first encounter leaping onto these thorns and it brings a smile to me . Depending on whether this is successful I may be able to retire my pellet gun.
