Squirrel traps and then relocate them. Last resort would be an air pellet gun.

Try Liquid Fence and Hot Pepper Wax. I've had some success with that. Note, though, that the Liquid Fence smells ungodly until it dries. Best not to spray it directly on the tomatoes themselves. Hot Pepper Wax can just be rinsed off, though.

This is a possible way to get rid of them temporarily and I hope it works. I would reapply after every rain or once a week. It will not hurt your vegetables at all.

It is an unorthodox method

Pee in a spray bottle and spray it about 4 ft away from your garden perimeter.

The squirrels will go away from the scent as soon as they get a wiff of it. Sort of like marking your territory

I never worked up the nerve to open the bottle and try it. We moved, no squirrels at new home, but bottle of fox urine remains unopened on a shelf in my garage. I hope that bottle doesn't get broken before I get around to throwing it away!

Animal or human urine does work as does used cat litter (tho not appealing to many and should not be used in the garden only in the surrounding squirrel areas ;).

So do cats and dogs. Anything that can startle them or smell of predators...and they will learn. Another alternative is to provide more attractive alternate sources of food and water away from the garden - a bird bath low on the ground, dried corn (cheap) sunflower seed, bulk nuts.

Contact sprays do little in my experience and the one time I tried pepper spray I quickly learned how harmful, even cruel it can be to both the squirrels and any domestic pets that come in contact with it. It sticks to paws and gets in their fur, mouth and eyes. No offense but I'd go with the .22 before I'd use it again.

If so, find their burrows, take a burrow-sized rock, a block of wood and a sledge hammer. Drive the rock down the hole, followed by a couple more rocks. Search out all holes and drive rocks into them.

Ground squirrels live underground for months out of each year, they also dig but, this technique has worked for me on a number of occasions. Either they die down there or they pack up and move where I won't need to harass them again.

I haven't seen any squirrels suffering because of my use of hot pepper wax. They do seem to steer clear of it, though.

I've had trouble with squirrels stealing from my bird feeders. I had one that worked briefly, then broke, and I've just been online trying to find another one that has good reviews.

If I put a feeder away from the bird feeder, will the squirrels eat that and leave my plants alone? Or would I just be enabling them?

A powerful .177 sized air rifle with a heavy pellet is more than a match for a squirrel. They are quiet too, it won't "disturb" your neighbors the Democrats LOL. Got to check your local regulations on usage but you also need to check regs on live-trapping and relocating wildlife which is illegal in most states.

I dont know if I would feed them with another food source. If they are anything like the tree squirrels i have, they will eat what they can and bury left overs into the soil. Thats my experience. :)

i use walnuts in the shell, spray painted red, then spray with glue and roll in cyanne pepper place in garden where squirlls can find usually works well.
