When Relatives Visit Orlando....

I am needing recommendations for my Sister and her family. They will be coming to Orlando in June. They are staying all week and doing the Disney thing. She is looking for somewhere to stay near Disney that isn't an arm and leg and that is safe. She would like a place with a full kitchen. Her budget is $2500.00 for everything including airfare. Any ideas?? I suggested a park hopper. A place to stay seems to be the main concern.

Cliff I'd highly recommend the cabins in Fort Wilderness right on the Disney property. The one we rented slept 6, full kitchen with dishwasher, bath. There was a deck and charcoal grill and of course all of the other FW ammenities and transportation (boat) to the Magic Kingdom etc. I'm sorry I don't recall the price.

If there is one place to visit I would go to Leu Gardens. It's easy to get to and it has the best and biggest variety of plants in the area. I would spend a morning or late afternoon there and enjoy. It's at it's best when the camelias are blooming, but it has a beautiful rose garden, a very nice butterfly garden and a wide variety of other flowering plants, bushes and trees. You might see a gator also. Lukas Nursery is the biggest in the area, but near Disney Biosphere is an excellent nursery to visit, especially if you are into native plants and those that attract butterflies and hummingbirds. If you plan to visit, shoot me an email. I always like to go to Biosphere.

LOL..only kidding!!! My mom and I did rent a van when we fly down a few years ago...I had to rent a van to bring back all of the palms..."Thelma and Louise" all over again!!! LOL...I loved it!! When we go to mom and her dh's, we stay at their home because they have room for everyone. My dh and I share the cleaning/kid duty with no problems from anyone. I do basic cleaning while visiting but generally don't do deep cleaning. I would do what ever mom asked though. I feel I will be needed more as they grow older and I'm kind of looking forward to helping out. Now,,dh, he often does some heavy duty thing with mom's dh to help them get a complex job done. He enjoys that because it gives him something important to do and of course his help makes things better for his in laws. When my family visits, they stay in our finished basement so they can have some privacy. They can sleep in, read, watch tv, until they decide to come up and visit. It works for us. I've only had one "argument" with my FIL and mom's dh. Both times I left very quickly with out a word. I think everyone knows I don't put up with stupid crap more than one day. That's just the way I work. Life is to short to live with chaos.

I am amazed at how few errors or disappointments those above have had to deal with. Our build has been fraught with many more than described above. It seemed almost daily we would find something wrong (either completely wrongly built, or just misguided such as the vents in awkward spots). When we were hiring subs (we are DIYing the second half so far fewer errors in this half), we would come home and brace ourselves as we knew something would not be to our liking. We just did not yet know what it was. Some of the bigger, harder to fix errors were: 1)framers did not use a level when they set the roof trusses so all the walls were off centre in our upper level -- we did not find this out until after they had bricked, 2)The masons did not clean up all of the mortar spills when bricking so there are still mortar stains on our bricks 3)Having no HVAC plan with agreed upon locations for duct runs, vents, etc set us back months as we had to go back to get a HVAC design done and start with a different HVAC plan and contractor,4) the foundation was not level in all spots, and some spots did not have a brick ledge where brick was planned. I did read an ebook before building that is all about typical building errors to watch out for (or poor design decisions made by builders). I highly recommend it for those seeking more answers than provided by this thread. Good luck all. Most mistakes can be fixed. Find them as soon as possible. Assume every time you visit that mistakes have been made in your absence and measure and check every single thing. Work out in advance the locations for everything (esp HVAC items) as builders will not usually make good aesthetic choices. Not sure why so many of them think a thermostat should be centered on the largest display wall in your house. Here is the ebook I mentioned that deals with typical errors to watch out for and hence avoid. I found the fee for the book to be well worth the price. Sorry it is not free. I have no association with the author. I just found the book helpful. I imagine the book would be more useful to those at the planning stages, or early build stages. Carol ebook

Hi Cliff,
I rented a wilderness home at Fort Wilderness, it was nice and spacious, and very convenient. We had a great time there, didn't even need to go to the parks half the time.

Otherwise, has she checked into a timeshare? There are a million in the Orlando area and I'm sure she can find a 2 bedroom rental for what she would pay for a cheaper motel. Tell her to check out these websites out for timeshare rentals:

Resort network has reviews on some of them, tug access for reviews is limited to members. Otherwise she can use www.tripadvisor.com to see what others have to say about the places.

If she's really a glutton for punishment, she can stay at a timeshare, do the tour, and probably score some day passes to one of the parks. You'll see some advertisements for them on both of the above sites too.

No, I won't be able to make Ricky's swap. Will be in Key Largo that weekend. Hoping to see a plumie tree or two that needs a light trim. lol

Cliff, tell her to check into staying at the Disney All Star Music, Movie or Sport resorts. They are the 3 cheapest there and the savings on a rental car and parking might be worth it, as opposed to staying outside the property.

If they do stay there, don't buy the food plan, because if you don't use it all, you can't get back what's left on it. We ended up with so much back that the last night at dinner, we left the whole thing as a tip for the waiter, so that Disney wouldn't get it!lol

NO WAY CLIFF!!! Key Largo will ALWAYS be there, I won't always be at Ricky's!! Heaven forbid, he and Karen would move out if I were. What am I going to do without you??? OK well, I guess I won't go to Ricky's either. Tony's not going now you aren't going. Doesn't everyone KNOW???...I go for MY MEN not for the stoopid plants!!!

Well, my sister just returned home form their trip in Florida. They stayed at Orange Lake Resort, did the Disney thing and stayed in Clearwater a few days.

She had a blast!! I didn't get to go up and see her due to school and work. We talked every evening tho and when she needed directions. lol

I keep trying to get her and her husband to move to Florida. They both love it every time they visit. They keep finding more and more each time.

I was reminded really fast why I moved to Florida went I went home in July for a wedding. Although the mountains are nice and beautiful...they just ain't home to me anymore. Nothing like living in paradise.
