Visiting Orlando Florida - Any good plumeria places to see?

I'm visiting Orlando and Melbourne in a few weeks and was wondering if anyone knows of any good tropical garden centers or other places to visit. I'm hoping to find some nursery or avid plumeria grower to visit while in the sunshine state. And if I'm real lucky I will bring back some cuttings.

You might want to try Exotic Plumeria just outside of Tampa, Florida. They literally have thousands of plumerias on display. If you are a plumeria lover, its worth a visit to see the hundreds of species they have. Check their website for directions and hours of operation. You won't be disappointed.

Geez, I'm starting to sound like a shill for these guys, but I remembered reading that Brad's is in the Orlando area. There's a link below. Looks like a reasonable drive from Orlando, but you may need an appointment.

I'm so envious. I'd have to leave my very big state and drive a few days (so I'd have a car to fill with plants!) to see any commercial plumeria growers. Take lots of pics, okay?

Hi, Thanks for all the reply posts. Based on what someone said about not being able to buy plants at Leu Garden's gift shop, I guess I'll go elsewhere. Someone told me for orchids to check out World of Orchids. I also heard that a local place (I forgot the name) should be getting plumerias in the next week or so. So, I'll try that as well. And if I stumble across a HD, or Lowes, or Walmart, I may check out their selection too. I'd like to get a dendrobium orchid in some bring different color like orange or green. (I already have a Phal orchid). I'd like to get an Amaryllis bulb (hard to find here in the Northeast right now) and I may want to get a plumeria cutting or something else. (already have one plumeria cutting). Very excited to visit in a week and a half.

I see lots of Plumeria in local landscapes again. Some have gotten quite large. There are several I see that are in backyards but you can see them from the street as they are taller than the house. Most of the Plumeria grown are cultivars of P. rubra. 2 others to consider are P. obtusa and P. pudica. P. obtusa seems to be a couple degrees hardier than P. rubra and it is mostly evergreen. Here at Leu Gardens, we got down to 27F one night back in 1/2003. The P. rubras were nipped back several inches to a foot. These were growing in a semi-protected location. The P. obtusa was out in the open and wasn't damaged except for some leaves dropping. It has white flowers. There is a dwarf form called 'Singapore Pink' with pink flowers but it is less hardy. P. pudica has lobed leaves and white flowers without much fragrance. It is also evergreen and flowers most of the year. One thing about Plumerias, if there is a hard freeze forecast you can easily dig up the plant or take cuttings and store it until warm weather returns. Eric Orlando,FL z9b/10a

No worries Lily, I ended up pruning my inlaws plumeria tree so I still had fun. It's really easy to do it yourself though. I used a hacksaw. The only problem I had to overcome was cutting off a healthy branch. Once I got over that hump and realized that a properly pruned branch is better than having the lawn service break it off randomly, it was a no brainer and I pruned away. The final tree looks much better and now it won't grow into the house or into the path of lawnmovers. Here is the tree before pruning. When all was said and done, I completely took off only 2 branches. I ended up with 4 cuttings; two mid-stem cuttings and two ends with multiple growing tips. They are showing some signs of rooting as they warm themselves on a heatmat under growlights for 19 hours a day. From Garden 2010

Selby Gardens is a good suggestion, it's nicely done and a pleasant place to visit. Plumeria Gallery is in Naples, I've never been there but I've bought some things from her and they've always grown well. I haven't been to Michael's Bromeliads yet in Venice but I've heard good things about it. http://www.michaelsbromeliads.com/ Just driving around and looking at what people have planted in their yards is always fun too, especially on the barrier islands. Can't wait to see pics...your are driving right? Did you rent a mini van? LOL..only kidding!!! My mom and I did rent a van when we fly down a few years ago...I had to rent a van to bring back all of the palms..."Thelma and Louise" all over again!!! LOL...I loved it!!

Have geart trip and I can't wait to see the "loot" that you bring back!!!

Just a caution, if you plan on going to Exotic Plumeria make sure to email them early to find out if they will be there, and open. My husband, bless his sweet heart, was in Orlando in December. I had asked him to check out plumerias if he saw any. He checked online and drove all the way to Exotic Plumerias. They were closed. He was there during the posted hours open, but they were closed. Long drive for nothing. But isn't my husband wonderful? He could see they had a lot of plants though.

Great point Jennifer about calling Exotic Plumeria in advance. Their website stated that they would be open and when I arrived the gate was closed. I've found that during the dormancy season they do reduce their hours of operation. However I've found that if you call Exotic Plumeria and let Allan know the time you are coming they will have the gate open.

Thanks everyone for the suggestions on where to go. I'm going to try to see Brad's Buds and I will contact him to see about meeting.

I have to second or third the calling ahead when going to Exotic Plumeria. I was in Tampa last year and decided to drop by during posted hours. I too was met with closed gates, but upon calling I was able to come back later and ended up buying some cuttings.

The next time I am in Orlando, I will make sure to call before I visit. We have been there twice now, but I never looked at plumerias,until my husband went as I mentioned ( I wasn't along n that trip). It sounds like you definitely want to call first. Thanks everybody. Laura, yes he is a good hubby.( I have had him 38 years and counting :-) we got married when I was just 18! Scary!

That's one of the best shops in the state. They have an online store with most of their catalog online. Most of it is available in cuttings or trees. The prices are high though.
