Places to visit in South Florida

In a couple of weeks I am taking my family to south Florida for a week of vacation. We will be flying into Fort Myers and driving down to stay at Marco Island for the week. During the week we will also be taking a side trip down into the Keys for a couple of days to do some snorkeling and sightseeing.

I would appreciate any suggestions on fun places to visit, especially gardens or nurseries in any of those areas that might have plumeria.

We took this trip a few years ago and did the Everglades airboat tour, visited Sanibel Island, the Edison house in Ft. Myers, and snorkeled in Key Largo. We are expanding on that this time with more time in the Keys and looking for other things we haven't done. Thanks!

We are located in Homestead on the way to the Florida Keys.
Travel south from Naples on US 41. Enjoy the gators. Turn right on Krome Ave and come on down to our plumeria collection.
Best boom stage is past. Still have few hundreds in bloom.

There's loads of nurseries in Homestead but many are wholesale. The majority of my DH's FL suppliers are there. The only one I can think of offhand is Costa. If you are going to be driving near Ft. Lauderdale there's a place called Butterfly World in Coconut Creek. They have some beautiful enclosed tropical gardens filled with butterflies, hummingbirds and lorakeets and some nice outdoor gardens as well.

all the National trust properties have good gardens, Not to be missed at this time of year are the walled rose gardens at Mottisfont, the scent is wonderful, The Hillier arboritum in Hampshire is also wonderful, (nearby Pococks Roses is the local place to see and purchase roses) Hinton Ampner is another N.Trust property with a lovely garden. Stourhead Gardens, also N.T. are not too far out of the way on your journey.

Hello Kevin - I'm jealous...wished I could also visit Luc and Carol's plumeria nursery and see all of their plumerias that we all have been drooling over.

Hello Jo. Yes I am the Luc.
Carol does the shipping, I try to graft them fast enough for her. Your plant was grafted in Thailand, they use the V graft.

Nice to chat with you again, I was on the Florida board for awhile. Just ordered about 5 of your plants, all doing really well, magnus opus, california sally, another aztec gold, couple more.. Your plants grow very well and healthy..My 3 yr old aztec gold is blooming.

You said when you get a plant that has been grafted..is like getting a 2 year old plant?? is that correct?

Enjoy Florida. I love to go down there, rent a car and just drive -- along the coasts, to Sarasota, wherever. If you haven't been, you might consider Marie Selby garden in Sarasota. It's not real big, but it's kinda nice. Also Fairchild in Miami.

Hey Luc! Don't want to monopolize this thread, but I have a Cooktown Sunset from you all that is getting rather tall and lanky. Does this one root OK? I need to trim it back.

Selby Gardens is a good suggestion, it's nicely done and a pleasant place to visit. Plumeria Gallery is in Naples, I've never been there but I've bought some things from her and they've always grown well.

I haven't been to Michael's Bromeliads yet in Venice but I've heard good things about it. http://www.michaelsbromeliads.com/

Just driving around and looking at what people have planted in their yards is always fun too, especially on the barrier islands. You'll be amazed at the size of some of the plumerias.

I think I need to get in the car and go to some of these places too!

Thanks for the suggestions everyone! I will have to see what I can fit in and how much my wife and kids will tolerate of my plumie gawking! LOL! Fortunately, they actually love them too, so we should be OK. :)

Luc, I found your website yesterday before your post. Thanks for the response. I definitely plan to come by your place. I really look forward to it seeing it and maybe meeting you. Thanks.
