Help me decide which of these sites to order from?

After many searches of this forum, I've decided on madame julia correvon. Thanks for all the pics of it that everyone posted!

I priced it out on all the different sites that were recommended in the posts I looked at. There's moderate price differences involved, but if one retailer has a significantly better product than another I'd be willing to pay a couple bucks more.

Here's the list:

18.90 - Bluestone

22.00 - Joy Creek

22.60 - Garden Crossing

25.00 - Silver Star

25.35 - Chalk Hill

Brushwood is sold out of it. Since I'm a teensy bit tight on cash I'm leaning towards Bluestone, but figured I'd check in with all of you and make sure that wasn't a mistake first.

You don't need to mail order here for a Clem that isn't really rare. I've bought all almost 50 of mine locally.

I've seen her locally multiple times this season for cheaper than mail order.

You know Joy Creek is in Scappoose right? They are the most expensive locally for Clematis though. Cheaper for gas than to pay shipping. They are really just before Scappoose only about a half an hour from the Fremont Bridge.

Ferguson's Fragrant Nursery in St. Paul just west of the Donald exit on I5 has a very large selection of huge full one gallon Clems for $14.99 ea.

Portland Nursery has a decent selection as does Shorty's in Vancouver.

If you insist on mail order, I'd do Silver Star Vinery. You get bigger plants with bigger root systems.

I hear you Whencit! It's amazing how much these stupid doors cost. I am hoping the door I can paint is reasonable, but I am thinking it's at least twice the cost of the regular looking garage door. We'll probably not live in this house for the long term, but we keep saying that and we're still here 12 years later. I just don't know if on resale if a cooler garage door will really be a big deal. In our neighborhood, 90% of the houses still have their original panel doors with no windows. Replacement doors are still generally the non windowed ones, but there are a few with the basic arched window etc. Not really any with the carriage look doors with the bigger windows. But, I would suspect in the next year or two people will begin replacing garage doors, and if the carriage style door is the new thing, I'd hate to spend the money on a plain panel door and be kicking myself in two years when I'm competing in a resale situation with someone with an up to date door making their house look less 1980's and more up to date. But, we are talking garage doors here, not world hunger so in the scheme of things not a gut wrenching decision! I guess I have too much time on my hands this weekend - DH and son are off camping and I'm getting paint and garage door quotes.

What part of Texas are you in? I'm building in the Fort Worth area. I made a bid list of wants and needs along with a budget. I then did research into local builders and visited the show homes for some of them. I also looked at the BBB reviews for them and spoke to my realtor for suggestions. I actually found meeting with them and looking at their websites to be very useful The design/build model is very popular for custom homes around here so the websites helped me learn about their style. Some of them built homes that were way too fussy for my tastes (what I call the Dallas chic) so I ruled them out. Meeting with the builders helped me rule out builders very quickly. Some of them I just didn't click with and some of them seemed to be too cookie cutter. Another one didn't understand some of the basic things I asked him about such as build allowance and another one's rates were too high. I then narrowed it down to three builders and visited potential lots with them. This exercise was surprisingly illuminating. One of the builders tried to convince me that a truly awful lot (I could see a billboard) was the way to go. I later learned that his company owned the lot. Another one kept steering me towards really easy to build on lots that had no character. The one I chose had real vision. When I showed him the lot my dh loved but I was afraid wasn't buildable he got excited. He was able to tell me how he would be able to build on the lot and gave me a vision of a wonderful home with a master bedroom that overlooked the trees and a sweeping patio. When I expressed my concerns about how difficult that would be to accomplish he took my dh and I to some of his other build sites to show us how the foundation would be built and how it would address the problems with the site. I also liked the fact that he was a smaller builder so I felt like our house wouldn't get lost in the crowd.

Very good questions posted by maries1120. Don't focus so much on brand name. Here's the three keys - style you want, build quality, price. Come up with your favorite 4 or 5 style cabinets out of all the brands (if you can come up with that many, don't just add something to the list if you only sort of like it) and make sure that they are available in the finishes you like. Next, compare how they are constructed. There are a lot of tips out there about what makes a good quality cabinet so do some searching (in general, particle board or mdf used anywhere is not recommended in a vanity, but that is just the tip of the iceberg). If more than one meets the criteria, going by price from there is pretty safe, however, if you like the service of a particular retailer better, price is less of a factor.

Division or Stark? There are two Portland Nurseries. Just in case you didn't know. :)

They are both worth visiting.

Don't worry if the foliage looks scraggly, you'll want to cut it back when you plant it anyway. If it has blooms, enjoy them before cutting back.

I've noticed that a lot of the less popular Clems get held over from year to year at the nurseries and then I find them and get gallons with huge roots and multiple stems rather than one or two. They keep cutting them back because they reach the top of the stake so they keep sprouting more vines. :)

Glad you're feeling better! Summer colds are the pits.

I went to the one on Stark. Thanks again for the tip! Because of traffic I wound up not getting there until soon before they closed, which was a total bummer. I could have wandered around there for hours! That's definitely where I'll be going when I'm choosing flowers for my window boxes next spring.

I picked up the Mme Julia and it's gorgeous. Thanks for your comment about enjoying the blooms before cutting back - I knew I was supposed to cut back when I planted, but I didn't want to because there are so many flower buds on it, and I was feeling very guilty for waiting.

I don't think this one had been one of the hold-overs - it has one long stem and one new one. The roots filled up the container, but it wasn't the tight clump of roots that my other clematis (purchased at Cornell Farms) had. Regardless, it looks great, and I'm very happy. So thanks again!

You are welcome. Cornell Farms is a nice nursery too. I bought my Helsingborg there last summer. I've never seen it anywhere else.

Portland Nursery is a nice place to hang out. It is also very close to the Hawthorne shopping district which has Powell's Books for Cooks and Gardeners among many other shops and restaurants.
