Can you help me decide which size foyer fixture?
Comments (4)This is from hinkleylighting.com HALL AND FOYER: Hall and foyer fixtures can create a welcoming atmosphere, while providing you with the general lighting you need to greet guests and assure safe passage into other areas of your home. Use flush and semi-flush fixtures, large chandeliers or pendants and sconces in hallways, stairways, and foyers. HOW TO SIZE A FOYER FIXTURE To determine the overall height of a hall or foyer fixture, always keep in mind the bottom of the fixture should be at least 7 feet from the floor. This will determine whether you use a flush, semi-flush, or if you have a tall ceiling, a multi-tiered chandelier. When sizing a chandelier or pendant for your foyer, add the length and width dimensions of the foyer area together and convert the total into inches. Example: The area is 18 feet by 14 feet. Added together this equals 32 feet. Then convert your sum to inches: the chandelier's diameter should be approximately 32" in width. In a two-story foyer, if there is a window above the front door, center the chandelier so it can be seen from outside. If the foyer is extra-large, you may also want to install sconces in the foyer. Sconces should be installed 60" from the floor and 6 - 8 feet apart. Since a standard ceiling outlet box will only hold a maximum of 50lbs., some large chandeliers and foyer pendants require special mounting hardware. Hinkley fixtures weighing more than 50lbs. are marked in this catalog for your convenience and will come with additional heavy duty support hardware and complete installation instructions. Comments (7)I'd be curious to know what you ended up using. Hopefully you'll get this message. I'm trying to decided which color to use right now. I found this site that lists all the sunbrella awning fabrics. My favorite is the 4923 Black Forest Fancy. Thanks! Comments (9)We have Marvin Wood/Clad, low-E 2, argon, dbl-hung, casement and french doors and they are five years old now. We are in central CA, south of SF Bay. I am not a pro, just a homeowner. I have no first-hand experience with the other two brands you listed nor did I research them (2002-2003). We did research Milgard, Pella and Andersen and saw Loewen at a friend's house. So the experience here is just on Marvin, not a direct comparison. Everything could have changed since five years ago. We wanted wood interior to stain so we required the best looking woodwork. The best looking woodwork at the time was by Marvin with stainable matching wood screen for the casement. They had very tight tolerance and were beautifully finished. The extruded AL and Kynar coating used on the cladding helped our decision. We also had a few simple custom requests and Marvin, at the time, was the one that had no problems meeting them. If all things were equal, the ability to customize and the woodwork quality would be given the most weights in our decision. It was then one of the more expensive bids but we have no regrets. After five years, they have been through 115-F heat and 25-F cold, exposed to direct sun, some snow, several hail storms, hit by balls, bikes, frisbees, some wind-whipped gravel and everything still works like new so far. No discernible fading yet. In terms of comfort, they have kept us relatively cool in the summer and pleasantly warm in the winter due to the low-E and argon. No nasty cold draft, no condensation except the bathroom one due to high internal humidity. Installation was top notch so they keep our house very quiet inside. We are in a state listed wildfire zone so we needed AL clad and tempered glass to resist the heat of wild fires. These ones do have metal spacer between the glass panes and we have learned that it is not the best in terms of limiting thermal transmission. We do not know if Marvin has changed that. With the large differences in price, you may want to carefully compare the three in terms of construction, material and then see which fits your application requirements. For example, if the intent is to paint, and they are all more or less equal in quality, then go with the cheapest. If the intent is to stain, then the best woodwork is important. If you plan to live in the house forever, it pays to get something you will be most happy with day to day for the next 20 years. Good luck!...See MorePlease, help me decide which size pantry to go with
Comments (4)You have a large space near the front door that looks hard to use. Can you make the pantry/laundry bigger by incorporating that space. You could put the washer and dryer under the window. Then you could have the nice wide foyer. you could have a separate laundry in that front area with a door opening into the foyer....See Morebestyears
