Can anyone help me decide which tomatoes for container growing?
Comments (15)In my experience, people tend to use the term "potting soil" as a generic for the stuff you buy in bags at the store (Miracle Grow, etc.), but if you read the label on those bags, a product that is intended for containers is actually called "potting mix". There is no "soil" or "dirt" in them. Thus experienced gardeners on this forum will emphasize that you want a soil-less mix for containers. True "soil" is too heavy for containers and will not drain properly. So what is in them, if not soil? Typically a mix of peat, shredded bark, sand, perlite, and/or compost. They may or may not include added fertilizers. Many people just buy the mix in bags, especially when they are starting out and if they don't have to fill a large number of pots. Others will buy the components and mix up their own, both to save money and control what goes into it. It depends on what quantities you need, how much money you have to spend, how much room you have to mix them together, and how much storage space you have. If you visit the Container Gardening forum here on GW, you will finds lots of threads that talk about various recipes for mixing your own. I'm not sure what products are available in Tokyo, but I think the research will help you evaluate the products you can find locally and decide which direction to go in. Good luck! Comments (59)artkillery, you changed the peak of the gable between your last post and the one at 9:13 am. If the second post is correct, I would change back to having the front gable in stucco and the two flanking masses all in stone. The reason is that if the gable does not reach very high, stone all the way up may make it look heavy and squat. I would ask about the roof pitch on that gable and only use the heavier material if it is higher, not lower. JMO! Comments (11)Why will you lose 3"? My end panels are only 3/4" thick...b/w the two of them, I only "lost" 1-1/2". As to how it will look, is the refrigerator against a wall of any kind? If so, it might provide an "anchor", but the other side won't be "anchored". Personally, I would do the built-in b/c I think a kitchen looks more "finished". If you're having a cabinet over it, I don't know if I'd like that much cabinet depth to be just sticking out past the cabinets on the sides w/no connection to the floor or at least counter below. Have you considered getting 15" deep upper cabinets on that wall run? That would reduce the difference to 13" and increase your upper storage by quite a bit (it's surprising how much more fits w/just that add'l 3") I have 26" deep end panels that are 14" deeper and I don't think it looks bad...I think it looks better. However, if you really like the look of your refrigerator sides (I assume they're the same "color" and finish as the front...many are not) and you don't mind seeing the cabinet over the refrigerator sticking out into the air, then go ahead and do it. It's your kitchen, after all! I don't have photos of what you're suggesting, but check the Finished Kitchens Blog (FKB), you might find some. Comments (90)Thanks everyone! So of course the one I chose is not even one of the original top 5 contenders from the top of this thread. I chose Hampton Cararra 3x6 satin finish from The Tile Shop. I was so afraid to go with marble because I really like variation in the tiles and I didn't want to end up with boxes of all white. I found a Tile Shop near me, never knew they existed until GW. I loved that they had so much in stock, and on display. So I was able to take an entire box of the Hampton Cararra home before I decided. Its the one in my post above from Nov. 7, on the right. It had a lot of variation and was a lot less expensive than some of the options I had been considering too, so it was my winner. Herbflavor, thanks for the compliments & for remembering. You are one of many here who specifically helped me a lot. Yes the whole project now is done. We love the new use of space, its really working out for the way we live just as I hoped. The kitchen is done just how I wanted it, though of course theres several decisions I second guess, but overall I love it. The other 2 rooms which we opened into each other I am just not thrilled with how they look yet because the budget has run out but I really wanted to do more in those rooms. I wish we could get all new furniture and I wanted built ins next to fireplace and new mantle, etc but its not happening for a while. I know we have time. I hope to do a reveal now soon, but I still need a window treatment on the big kitchen window. We get tons of light so I needed to put a paper shade up and I don't want that in my final pics!! I might still need one more post for advice on a window treatment...I'm thinking a woven wood shade in a dark tone like the island cabinet. I love the light kitchen, but I really like to ground it with some dark pieces. Heres a closer up......See MoreAndy Henson
