You're welcome Harmony. I've collected this type of rose related stuff since the early 80s. It got to be a bit overwhelming, so I thinned it in the early 90s, giving most of the catalogs to Bob Edberg of Limberlost Rose Books. A lot of it went away in a fire in 1996, but some survived. Friends have passed such things along to me over the years and I've begged for copies from others. I rediscovered a few things sifting through boxes of rose related stuff putting the books back into bookcases where I can get to them after a move two years ago. Fine tuning them to sort out duplicates I'll pass along to Jeri this afternoon at a rose gathering uncovered this and a couple of others. Finally learning how to massage the scanner has helped, too. I love that it is possible to adjust the size of the image shared through Flickr to here so they are shown larger, about legible size, making it easier for anyone who wishes to read them.

There is so much to learn from these things! We've had an extremely rich rose history here, but who would know? This catalog is particularly enjoyable to me as it ties in with the period covered by Mabel Osgood Wright's "Barbara" series, 1900 through 1910. Hi Patreesh, I'm not in the same zone as you, so the following should be evaluated with that in mind. Most of my well established roses are either once bloomers, or bloom in two heavy flushes with sporadic flowering between. Well established and nearly continual bloomers: The Austins - Heritage, Mary, Sophy's Rose, Molineux and not quite as continuous(but was moved this spring, so..), Geoff Hamilton. Shrub rose Easy Does It. Florbunda Marie Pavie. Very good rebloom on the rugosa Roseraie de l'Hay. Fragrance to die for! One year in the ground and a pretty constant bloomer - HT Firefighter. I added many new roses this year, it will be interesting to see who does what in the future. Do you water your roses? I found that to be the most influential factor for bloom and vigor, as well as over all health. A deep soak whenever they need it(not on a schedule!). I use RoseTone, alfalfa pellets, Neptune's fish and seaweed emulsion(secret weapon), some organic hydroponic amendments, green sand, and copious amounts of compost(the garden/nutri brew, bagged mushroom compost and leaf compost. Mulch with small pine bark nuggets. If I could get ground pine bark, I would buy all I found and use that. Not an expert by any means, but just what seems to work out for me here. The water seems to be the most important thing, by a long shot. Nice to see other CNYer's here! I hope you enjoy gardening in CNY, Nastarana. I have been following your posts for a while. I have read that florists raised forced, potted roses for the holidays. Often, they were ramblers which had been pruned heavily to make topiaries covered in flowers. Of course, it was much later than this (mid to late fifties), but when I was a small child, my great grandmother grew huge Boston Ferns and a number of potted palms in her living and dining rooms in Birmingham, Alabama. Suggestions for best continuous bloom rose?

Aaron, some of my roses do bloom in part shade, including Rouge Royale. I've found no difference in any blooms frying here, whether the rose grows in part shade or full sun. It's a desert here and the air is very dry. This does as much damage as sun and heat, making almost all roses quickly crunchy. We have been in a continuous heat wave since June 9, and no rose will do well in that, whether in shade or not. I wish the roses wouldn't even try to bloom when it gets so hot and dry. We had no rain for almost three months until a few days ago, and finally, we got one night of rain. No more since. Today, finally, we drop into the 80s. For a few days, then it goes back up, which I hope proves incorrect. I've grown Jude the Obscure (huge) for 17 years, and while it is an exquisite, unique rose, I don't find that it reblooms well, certainly not like Munstead Wood, so I hope you eventually do acquire Munstead Wood. Other great bloomers for me, which I've probably already mentioned (sorry) are Julia Child, of course, Tamora, Golden Celebration, Boscobel, Love Song, and good bloomers, Rouge Royale, Augusta Luise, Ebb Tide, Twilight Zone, Bernstein-Rose, Ballerina, and who did I miss--ha? You will have fun, if you find him, with the challenging Prince, which slogged along for years, and produced nice blooms, when it felt like it, on a pretty little bush. After The Prince's third transplant, it perked up, liked the place, and began a slow "expansion", which exploded about three years ago, when The Prince put pedal to the metal, blooming almost nonstop. The blooms even got darker. This rose has gotten so big that I'm wondering if it has gone own root, or what other major factor has caused such a transformation. Diane

Joey: Very good questions. Here are what I learn about own-root roses: 1) Where they are bred and the TYPE OF SOIL & weather predicts where they will be successful. Roses bred in acidic & rainy & less sun England will be successful in acidic & high rain East coast. But roses bred in alkaline & hot & sunny Southern France will be successful in alkaline clay & sunny garden. 2) How vigorous the root is? The newly bred roses ARE VERY VIGOROUS as own-roots, and can survive BOTH Pakistan 113 F hot summer and my zone 5a winter of -20 below zero. Vigorous roots are both long (at least 2 feet deep) and spreading wide. Vigorous roots are also THICK to store water in dry summer/winter. Dee-lish can die to the crown, but the root is so deep that it can go for 1 month without watering, either through a cold & dry winter or hot summer. Dee-lish has a climber as a parent (Graham Thomas). If a rose is bred with a climber in its genetics, it will have deeper root. 3) It's the selection of the fittest. In breeding roses, there will be many seeds ... and only the fittest seed sprout up to be the most vigorous root or to be disease-resistant. The other dozen to 100 seeds either don't germinate, or sprout some wimpy plants that black-spot & less petals, or can only bloom once a year. This answer your question directly, breed roses in your cold zone and see which seed can sprout in extreme cold temp., and which seed has the deepest root to survive the winter. English roses, bred in a colder climate than France: most have climber-heritage or Old Garden Roses' genetics, and English roses are actually favored by hot climate folks in Pakistan due to the vigor of their roots. Deeper root = more weather resistant. I hang out in Facebook Fragrant Rose Lovers group, where most Pakistan posters are. English roses are favored in both extreme hot and extreme cold climate due to the toughness of their roots to survive long periods of drought.

Thank you, Kim, you helped to identify my neighbor's 100% thornless pink rose: it's Irene Watts, or Pink Gruss. It has tons of blooms, even now, our nights dip down to low 20's. She planted her against the garage's, the same spot that I planted my rhododrendrons (got yellowish from the limestone foundation). Irene Watts is loaded in my alkaline clay, no wonder it's Hoovb's favorite.

I love history--this is so cool! And how interesting to see how many of the same rose varieties offered then are still treasured & available--Mme. Cochet, Clotilde Soupert, Frances Dubreuil, Perle des Jardins, Papa G., Etoile de Leon, Irene Watts, Enchantress, Bon Silene, American Beauty--all still pretty readily available--though not at "all 17 for $2.50" postpaid.
Gorgeous illustrations, too. Thanks for putting this catalog up :)

1900, 70 greenhouses principally devoted to ROSES?! Over 700 varieties of roses in 1900?! Archiving the catalogs I've had access to from Roses of Yesterday and Today, in nearly 45 years, they offered some 718 varieties. Dingee and Conard offered OVER 700 in 1900 alone! That amazes me! Kim
