A Photo Tour of Elizabeth Park Rose Garden

Hello rosey-friends!

There have been posts about the forum being boring as of late, so I thought I'd share these photos of Elizabeth Park Rose Garden in Hartford, Connecticut and stir up some excitement! We were there in June and it was an amazing sight to behold. I felt as if I had died and went to rose heaven! We were maybe 2 weeks too early to see the famous arches in bloom but there was still so much astounding beauty to behold that I could hardly stand it. The garden is immaculately maintained, there is a restaurant on the premises, and there is no charge to enjoy the garden. DH and I spent hours there and had a terrific lunch too. I highly recommend this jewel of a rose garden....it is amazing.

WOW. Please tell me that blue/purple rose was Veilchenblau. It truly was a veil of blue.

Great pics. Are those arches roses? Do they ever bloom?

Christine, we probably crossed paths -- wasn't it a gorgeous day? So many roses in bloom. I stayed until closing time at 5 and took lots of pictures. If I can figure out how to post them they may end up on the Roses Gallery here. Our Los Angeles Rose Society club met in the classroom, as we do every third Sunday (except July, August & Dec.). Also the San Fernando Rose Society was having the second day of their rose show in the hall. Roses everywhere! I saw that Yellow Lady Banks -- completely covered with blooms and thornless. It gets huge if you let it and doesn't repeat in fall, but I want it anyway! I met a lady in the garden named Amina who is a volunteer at the Huntington Gardens in San Marino, and she told me they have some special program there (ending next Sunday) about roses, focusing on the ones in Empress Josephine's garden at the Malmaison. I may try to go next Saturday.

Maggie......While we were there I noticed that at one of the entrances leading into the garden there was a box for people to take a printed copy of the layout of the garden. It did describe most of the roses that were planted in the garden, however, it did not name most of the ramblers and the climbers that surround the outskirts of the garden. Kate....the reason you don't see any people in the photos DH took was that particular day we kept getting pop-up thunderstorms and everyone would run for cover. DH and I pretty much stayed out in the garden, so as soon as the sun came back he would snap some pictures before everyone came back! So much of the time we had the garden to ourselves! (although we were soggy). Leslie....I do not know what vine is growing all over the pavilion but it is amazing, isn't it? Maybe someone else here who's been there knows? George and Sue - Yes I think in terms of unusual plants the only two that I hadn't seen before was the yellow coneflower and some regal lilies (seen in catalogs only). So these were a nice surprise! Being so close to the ocean and having a nice sunny day was the big draw for us. I think in terms of plants the most unusual, spectacular garden tours I've been on are the Mass Federation Garden Tours held every other year. In these gardens you see designer gardens (by famous plants people) with the most interesting plant selections and hardscapes. I guess that is why they only have it every two years! Sue - so did you read my comment that your containers were my inspiration? Thanks for taking a look! I have always liked to do silk flower arrangements. The containers were very much like making these arrangements up only with live plants. So it is addicting - I did find myself looking at the clearance pots and seeing if I could snag some for next season already. I am already noting what has worked and hasn't worked as well for next season. So Sue did you like the toilet planter? It was in the garden of the son of one of the other gardeners. The father's garden was so over the top and eccentric. The toilet was the only real over the top thing in the son's garden. I think you made a wise choice not including it. Your gardens are so lovely Sue I think it would have detracted from your gardens rather than adding to them. We all agreed although it was an interesting conversation piece it was probably the tackiest part of the tour! Sue

Awesome! When those arches are in bloom, it must be spectacular. What a marvelous site for a wedding it would be. You wouldn't need to spend anything on flowers with them all around you! Thanks for posting.

wow, what a beautiful sight.A person coud spend a whole day there looking and smelling by the looks of it.Wonder what those purple ones are.They are beautiful.

What a wonderful and thoughtful thing to do. It's one of the prettiest public rose gardens I've ever seen. I'm glad you posted so many pictures, it's the next best thing to being there.

Celeste, Thank you for sharing this beautiful garden. What is the red one at the bottom right in the first picture? Wow, wish I lived close enough to visit this garden. Husband looks good too.

Thank you all for your comments. It really is even more beautiful than you can imagine and so well-maintained too.

buford....unfortunately the pillar & rambling roses were not marked with identification so that purple rose is a mystery. However, I myself was so intrigued by it that I did some research and I think it might be the old rambler "Violette". And BTW, it really IS that deep purple you see! It was amazing to behold.

Celeste, I think you are right. I looked on HMF and Violette is a seedling of Veilchenblau.

Again, great pics. I've got this garden on my list of must sees if I get up north.

Lovely! I've visited it twice, once in the spring and it is a worthwhile trip. You really hit a good time because when I visitd it in the spring, tt was not quite so floriferous. I don't think it is Veilchenblau either; too dark but oh so spectacular. My Veilchenblau is much lighter and more of a mauve gray. I found it frustrating that so many of the roses, especially the old ones are not labelled. The old story; not enough help and budget crunches. Thanks for the lovely pics. Will have to go again in the spring.

Carla: the red one in that photo is one of the modern Meidilands (out of place in that old rambler row, but does give us some year-round color).

The arches bloom around the Summer Equinox, about the same time the CT rose society schedules its annual rose show. They are the original plants--over 100 years old!

I went to a college that's down the street from that place. I used to take my lunch bag over there often...but never thought I would have my own rose garden much less become addicted....oops....I mean become impassioned by them! It's a beautiful garden everyone should visit atleast once while the roses are in bloom. While you're in Hartford you could also visit Mark Twain's old home.
