Carol, tell me where they are located, and I will tell you what we know. There are some really wonderful roses in SJB. Some are identifiable, and others are not. For starters, there is a big Tea Rose out at the end of 3rd St., in the Alameda area. It's next to a little house that, clearly, was once a gas station, in the long-ago. This is a magnificent specimen of 'Niles Cochet.' There is a 'White Maman Cochet' in front of a cottage, across from the Abbe Park Softball field. It was once perhaps 10-ft high, but was cut down to 3 ft or less a couple of years ago. It was touch and go for a while, but I think it will live. Many of the roses within the State Historic Park are un-named, but most of those have been assigned Study Names. Jeri

Here's the plan: Start with a tour of the cemetery, have lunch at the Spanish garden, then tour the Zanetta house garden. There are a number of walk by/drive by roses as well, and I'll give directions to those, so people can see them at their leisure between the other gardens, and not en masse, as they are on private property. There won't be a fee, but there will be a donation jar available, no obligation. For those who like BBQ ribs, there will be an added attraction- the annual cook-off in town. I picked a date that didn't have an event on the calendar at the time I chose it, but in towns like SJB, there's some event to attract tourists every weekend. Jill

Jeri, I think that tea might be 'Pink Maman Cochet' Pamela- the flowers are about nickel size, though I do see a resemblance to Daisy Hill in flower form. When I first saw it I thought it might be a spinossissima, but it doesn't set hips, so I couldn't check if they were black. Jackie- I think we may have had that thought in the past, that or Russelliana, but the flowers are smaller than dlG, and that one doesn't start as light pink or end as purple as this. The foliage is similar, though- rough, dark and multiflora.

I'm not at all sure Perle d'Or is gone. Since I came late to the cemetery I did not see everything, and plants Jill pointed out to me as we were moving on the the next area are a blur in my mind. I did not get pictures of them. But several roses were gone and many others are greatly diminished. This seems to be the fate of roses in that cemetery. Roses at the mission age getting at least some care. Roses in the Settler's Cabin park have signage but are overgrown with weeds. With budget problems and the cutback in rangers are getting very little care, just what the few (one?) knowledgeable volunteer(s) can give. Roses on private property range from those receiving decent care to being weed-choked on a vacant lot. As for the celebration, do not judge attendance by the crowd in the pictures I took. I deliberately took the indoor pictures before it officially started. I thought you would be able to see more clearly without the crowd. The outside vendor pictures were taken while the event was actually happening. Based on the times I have gone, I would say that attendance was down from its all-time high, but still very reasonable.
