2nd to Last Vintage Order Arrived
Comments (8)Nastara, the Ruga and Morning Stars I received were really good size and looked to be at least a couple of years old; Ruga was actually blooming like mad right out of the box yesterday. So maybe they weren't that popular and they still have quite a few? If not, I will be sure to send you cuttings :) I think a lot of us are going to be hitting eachother up for cuttings of some we weren't able to get, if no other nurseries pick them up. You mentioned the Ayreshires, although I don't know of a source for Duc de Constantine, I'll keep my eyes open for it. Looks really nice! I have a rambler addiction...just happy I have to room for them, otherwise I don't know what I would do without them! Bluegirl...Jack Frost was on my shortlist....you'll have to let us know how it does. I may hit you up for cuttings of it later :) I bet you're right about their recent sales...I can't believe how much inventory they've sold out of recently! I have one last order coming at the end of June...just in case I have any last minute additions. Tammy...See MoreFinal Last Vintage Order
Comments (41)Thank you very much Harbor I really love that one, I could easy pick out 3 other ramblers, but I don't think I have the space they need with the ones I already have growing. Even my "short list" of antiques I want for the lower garden I really have to cull some because there are more than I want than I space for with out removing the hedge. It is not that I love the hedge, but truthfully, maybe it is foolish to remove an edible hedge that is probably antique itself that needs no water for roses....See MoreJust ordered from Vintage - What can you tell me about these?
Comments (4)Elie Beauvilain -- Blooms are beautiful, but my patience is at an end. If she doesn't do something exciting VERY soon, this rose will be gone. All two feet of her. It's been close on five years. Perhaps she will love Texas heat. Gilbert Nabonnand -- It took him a good four years to really establish, but he is finally a graceful plant of some four feet, which covers itself in opalescent blooms. In coastal Southern California, he's a winner. Le Pactole -- This rose was returned to commerce, having been discovered in Sonora by Botanist and Rosarian Fred Boutin. I LOVE IT! I saw it first in the Sacramento City Cemetery, where it is at least 8 ft. tall. The bloom color is very like Lamarque, but the form is different. Twisting ribbon-like petals give it a unique look. Le Pactole may take a while to mature, but once it does, it's a winner. Radiance -- It has been said of the Radiance clan that they can be grown successfully in any place where civilized man (or woman!) has managed to live. That's probably no exaggeration. They are disease-free, beautiful, and vigorous. I have Red Radiance, and intend to get Radiance. Lady Anne Kidwell -- Among my favorite Poly-Teas. A graceful plant which can get big if not pruned. Disease-resistant in California. Blooms in volume. You won't regret this one. Sprays are very open (this is not a prospect for rose shows -- judges hate it). Blooms remind me of softly-tied cerise satin ribbons. Jeri...See MoreHow to I Clean/Polish Vintage Drawer Pulls?
Comments (12)Given the age of the piece, my hunch is that the pulls are all brass. (Check by using a magnet. If it pulls, you have some other metal there.) In terms of refinishing the brass, I have done (and HAVE HAD done) a lot of brass over the years. My favorite approach is to taken them to a metal refinisher and have them do it! I have had brass refinished to patinas ranging from oiled rubbed bronze (almost black) to a bright shiny brass. In my neck of NorCal, the place I go to is Mac the Antique Plumber. I bet you could call them for a local rec. In terms of DIY, I have had luck with many brass cleaners, but not with home applied lacquers. (They haven't lasted or worse, end up streaky after a few months). Thus, I would either hire the job out, find a lacquer that really does work on metal,or just clean the knobs and let them slowly lose their luster (which isn't a problem per se, but does change the appearance.)...See Morejacqueline9CA
