Health of McClinton Tea and Rhodologue Jules Gravereax?

I see that vintagegardens.com now has both in stock (october 2011)

I've been to their home garden several times but can't remember either rose.

They both appear very beautiful to me, in the photos, and McClinton Tea is said to be quite fragrant

what I'd like to know is how healthy are they?

I have a

-no-spray garden

-c. 20 miles east of San Francisco.

-where conditions favor powdery mildew greatly.

I had to shovel prune 'Ducher' and 'Angels Camp' Tea as well as 'Georgetown Tea' because they defoliated from powdery mildew. My rose budget is small and I don't want to buy another rose that cannot survive a no-spray situation.

I'm in a different climate but I grow Rhodologue and it's a very healthy plant here. It's still young, but blooms regularly and is very fragrant. Doesn't get much mildew here.

Luxrosa, my 'Rhodologue Jules Gravereaux' is completely free of powdery mildew right now (just went out and looked at him to verify), even though other roses located in the same area have it. As far as I recall he was getting a little bit PM at times in the two years that I have him, but it was never a major issue.

To me it is one of the most beautiful Tea roses that I know of, a real stand-out in terms of the loveliness of the blooms. If you don't get absolutely discouraging reports regarding his PM resistance in your specific climate, if I were you I would try him. He is just too pretty to not give him a chance :-)!

Hi JessicaBe For what it's worth, I've grown some of the teas you list in a zone 6 pocket in my zone 5b garden for about 4-5 years. I'll post another thread sometime about these when they bloom, but my bottom line reaction is - it depends. Like Seil I enjoy zone pushing and don't spend a lot of money on my tea experiments (all from Chamblees, own root gallons). The results are decidedly "OK", but as expected none of them are as spectacular as they'd be in a warmer zone. Most of them have survived - so far the only ones that died were Safrano and Monsieur Tillier, though Duchesse de Brabant got planted later than I'd have liked last year and isn't doing so well yet. The following tea roses have survived and bloom reasonably well for me: Mrs. B.R. Cant, Madame Antoine Mari, Maman Cochet, Mrs. Dudley Cross, and the best of the bunch has been Georgetown tea (thanks to Olga for the recommendation). Remember that I do winter protect everything in my yard, and the teas get protected first with a full-sized bag of leaves next to them rather than a chopped down third of the bag. I doubt they'd bloom much without protection even if they survived, since teas want to build up structure over the years from existing old wood. Okay! Here you are, "ye of little faith" ;-) I rummaged around and found the bloom below on my RJG a few minutes ago (the bloom I last showed was disintegrating and not going to open any more than it had, being hemmed in by the buds around it and beat up by last weekend's wet weather). Note that it is not much different from yours (a few more petals, perhaps) and, I should note, this one does have darker reverses on all petals. I would predict, next spring, or perhaps a few more springs from now, you will see blooms on yours like those in my original photos (she does that every year, here, reliably), if all goes well. It is typical for teas to have more sumptuous blooms in spring, from what I see. The diameter of this bloom is 4.5".

Robert, I don't have any of those but will list these that I do have because they are decidedly garden worthy. Lady Hillingdon--for sheer remontance and color of bloom Rosette Delizy-a fountain of blooms, always Clementina Carbonieri-beautiful color,exceptional rebloom Devoniensis--smells so good, blooms so beautiful Mme. Berkeley--beautiful, the cleanest foliage, no pm at all Marie van Houtte--sturdy, blooming, beautiful Mme. Lombarde--one of the best fragrances of the teas Maman Cochet--exquisite blooms, see my gallery on French mamans Mlle. Franziska Kruger--exquiste, balls in the Spring but lovely ever after. Souv. de Therese Lovet, a fine small red tea Souv. de Claudious Denoyal--even better, redder, and a great rose fragrance, love this rose. 'Susan Louise' is one heck of a rose. Can be grown as a climber or as a self supporting bush, very attractive when the lower laterals are removed and the bush is tree shaped and sized. I am madly in love with this rose for its huge pink and cream blossoms that bloom in all 4 seasons here, when most Tea roses reduce bloom production, or stop blooming, in winter. 'Devoniensis' traditionally called the Magnolia Rose, shows the most exaggerated style of bloom I've ever seen in a rose that is cup shaped, and filled with petals inside that are arranged in scalloped rows. It makes me want to dive into the rose blossom, like Alice going down the rabbit hole. 'Anna Olivier' is the most deeply fragrant Tea I've ever smelled, I would guess that might come from Bourbon influence. A wonderful rose. Of all white Tea roses I love our white 'Maman Cochet' the best. In winter the pink guard petals turn white too, making this starry Tea rose a snow beauty of a rose. 'General Tartas' I like him fine. If Tea roses were the only roses I could grow, I would remain content. Luxrosa

Ducher, Angel's Camp Tea, and Georgetown Tea are also no longer in our yard due to horrific mildew issues.

As noted by Christina, Rhodologue Jules Gravereaux here gets a touch of mildew early in season but within tolerable levels. The blooms are spectacular and very full and withstand heat well. For me, the bush is rather upright and tidy -- more like a hybrid tea, though in no way stick-like.

McClinton tea gets no mildew here, but the flowers blow fast in hot weather (probably not so much a problem on your side of the hill).
