THERE ARE MANY ROSES THAT SHINE IN SPRING, BUT

WHICH ROSE, IN YOUR GARDEN, IS A SUPERSTAR FOR

YOU, IN AUTUMN?

For me it's a rose called Morning Jewel. I don't do much

to help it along and it blooms and blooms every Autumn.

It is a rose of Scottish origin, which pleases me 'cause of

having Scottish ancestry. I have new roses in my garden

this year. So we will see how they do in Autumn, this year

and next. But for now, Morning Jewel is the Fall Superstar.

Hey denninmi, I sent an email a couple weeks ago through gardenweb and yesterday. Not sure if they reaching ya. Just was curious if you had any 'Brilliant Rose' variety Autumn Olive cuttings that haven't leafed out yet that maybe you can send over so I can try rooting. I am doing some cuttings now of Ruby and the wild form that are leafing out now and also getting some H.S.N. varieties in a few weeks from Rolling River, (except Brilliant Rose which is sold out until next year, so let me know if can send some cuttings). Grandma's Yellow Rose selected as Texas Superstar

Grandma's Yellow is also known as the found rose Nacogdoches Yellow. I haven't read that they have identified the actual rose which must have been in commerce originally. Any ideas? It was found in Nacogdoches (of course) where it had survived on it's own for a good while and beat out other found roses to be awarded the Texas Superstar award. I owned it last year until it succcumbed to my (unwittingly applied) salty irrigation water. Now that we've shut down the irrigation my roses are sooo much happier. I miss Nacog. and will have to get another. Very floriferous, lovely color.

I have really enjoyed my garden this spring and summer as well And have had lots of super stars Just I am not good at all at putting up pictures Clematis where for sure fantastic best any year yet. As where Iris, day lilies a variety of them and most purchased over the years from We are in the Hayfield now. Just now are the phlox in whites and pinks mostly And salvias, which have bloomed all summer. In m pond is Pickeral weed I don't use a pump in the pond and picked up a piece of this plant some years ago It looks so nice and tidy and has a nice blue flower to it which lasts for three weeks at least . It competes with water lilies in the pond but neither are overly aggressive . Fish have lots of hiding places. In pots I have tropicals mostly and Brugmansia my favourites are actually going to bloom this year. Before the frost. Wish I had pictures for you all looks so good seeing photographs of other peoples gardens.

Which Salvias did or did not bloom for you this autumn and winter

The summer was a tale of three salvia gardens. Two were well established and a third, a newly planted xeric one with no access to water. Here in SW New Jersey we saw weather much like Richard's in North Carolina, but with a slightly different pattern. Rainfall here was well below average from the beginning of June all the way into September, and while we probably saw a little more rain, most of it came in spotty thunderstorms that struggled to maintain themselves. In the well watered gardens the microphyllas and greggii and their hybrids grew quite well. There was continuous bloom on Orange Door, Raspberry Delight, Wild Thing, Navaho Bright Red and a half dozen others. This surprised me a bit. Even at the xeric site the same plants were in continuous if light bloom right through to frost. The size of these xeric grown plants was about half the size of the irrigated ones. Maybe they would have grown more if they had been fed in mid summer, but because of the drought I was afraid to do so. Some other sages never did reach their full size. Involucrata made no attempt to put out a few mid summer blooms like it usually does. Waverly also waited until September. Indigo Spires was not nearly as vigorous as in other years. As the summer went on the guarantica Brazil slowly declined and by early fall were mere shadows of their July selves. The only guarantica to thrive was Van Remsen, it put on a show of a lifetime out in the vegetable garden in August. Mulberry Jam grew just fine, but since it was my first try for the hybrid I have no idea whether it was "normal" Salvia subrotunda did not like the drought at all. The patches that were watered show no ill effects and behaved as usual but attempts to grow them in drier leaner soil verged on failures. Under similar lean conditions the various coccinea cultivars did better. In the xeric beds bloom was delayed by as much as a month and the plants were smaller, but they did OK. Upright macrophylla was new to me so I don't know if an August bloom is late for this species and although the bloom was light the beauty of the flowers made up for that. Splendens Pink from Ginny Hunt didn't bloom until almost September and never seemed happy, I may not grow it again. Uliginosa was skimpy and late. My main patch at a nearby nature center suffered its second year of pretty much total deer destruction. You have to respect a deer which can eat that nasty stuff. The big and total failure of the year was praeclara. The plants hardly grew and by the look of the leaves suffered from some sort of disease. Whatever that disease was it did not spread to the nearby subrotunda. Chiapensis and buchananii grew OK I guess although I would have liked to see more flowers on the later and an earlier bloom on the former. Both were new to me so maybe their growth was normal.

Devon I just love the color of Morning Jewel, its beautiful
Buford your Tropical Sunset is stunning.
I really missed my Tropical Sunset.
After the April Frost, it took a head dive right into a brown bag.
Well my superstar roses right now are these ones.
They just keep on blooming. And the color of their blooms
look so rich and vibrant.

Niecey those pictures are AMAZING. What make is your camera?

I have read in A Southern Garden that Mrs. BR Cant is even better in autumn than in spring. My rugosas are all blooming, and Devoniensis (the shrub) is about to put out its 4th or 5th flush of the season.

DIGGER, I have seen many pics of your roses and I am
so impressed at how awesome and floriferous they all are.
No matter the variety, you and deb work magic into the
rose. You have the most beautiful hybrid-tea's I've seen.
Both the flowers and bush of all your roses are unbelievable.
Can you tell I'm a fan of your rose growing ways? I wish I
had that kind of talent. Thank's for posting and hope to see
more of your pics in the future.

Thanks Devon, growing roses has always seemed so simple to me. I've grown them so long because it is easy. We water, feed and weed them. Ain't I sickening? Deb and I do spend a lot of time in the yard but we aren't doing anything special. OK... washing the underside of foliage twice a week

On the autumn subject, I have a foliage contest each year. I conduct it the first of September when all the roses have had to go through the summer. I could never decide on a winner in June.

Decided to wait and see which one had foliage begin to look bad. I noticed a couple yellowing leaves on Gemini the other day. Thought that would make Orange Passion the winner. Walked down the drive to OP and saw a couple yellowing leaves on that critter too. Had to continue the contest. Both have 50+ buds opening this morning. Snow is possible next week. Perhaps that will help me determine a winner :)

My Double Delight is in the midst of a glorious flush, and Flower Girl is on the brink of being covered with dainty pink blooms. French Lace just finished a flush and looks like she's attempting to produce another one. We're on the CA central coast and until yesterday had no rain for three months.

These are my only roses; they're in very large containers on our deck. I hardly feel that I belong here but they're my babies!

My jaw dropped when I saw that incredible photo of that stunning beauty of Brass Band... what a shame it is hardy to zone 6 only! Sigh...

I know some of you rose purists will cringe, but my Double Knockout Roses are doing great, putting out loads of beautiful blooms still... in fact, they have been going strong since May!

I am so jealous of you guys we had a record hot summer I just started my Sept. pruning today not a rose bloom in sight. but then maybe they will still be going by christmas who knows?

Everyone's pics are so goergeous!

Double Delight put on a heck of a show in the last week or 10 days. The blooms were HUGE!

However, I think Chicago Peace is going to try to out-do DD; it has set 12-15 buds (first year plant) that should open up toward the end of the week.

Oh, then there is Moondance which is so flower heavy that all the canes are bent over.

Arizona and Peace are taking a break, but they carried on profusely thru the whole summer, so they deserve it.

Peachiekeen-I agree with everyone else about your GORGEOUS photos! You may have enabled me into this one.

Ostrich-I wouldn't let what they "say" about zones prevent you from trying Brass Band. We're in zone 5a...the EM Mills Rose Garden here in Syracuse has been growing this one for years, very successfully. :0) Phyl

Brass Band is! Tell us more about it. Is it a floribunda?
I am limiting my rose list greatly, this next season, but
it looks like I may need Brass Band just to survive.
