Ground covers, what are they good for?

I have one that I planted in the wrong spot. Immensee (Grouse). It has truly vicious thorns. Doesn't block weeds so it is very hard to deal with as it grows amongst the weeds that attach themselves to the weeds, etc.

So I'm thinking grow it on a sort of trellis? Arching hopefully decorative?

Then I thought how does one use a ground cover especially one that is vigorous and may grow 10'? The only way I guess would be as a climber, or as a ground cover in a spot by itself as it surely wouldn't work in a rose bed amongst other roses. Too big, impossible to weed, low growing and mostly out of sight.

I also grow Knirps which works well on the border as it is small and blooms a lot.

So what has been your experience with GC's.
