Can you I.D. this plant?

This plant came up by some shade garden plants a woman gave me several years ago - this is the first time it has bloomed, but I have no idea what it is. Any ideas? It's about 4 feet tall at the top of the bloom and is obviously hardy in my zone 5 garden. The bloom has an allium look to it, but the plant obviously isn't an allium. It is blooming now, for the first time, in September, so it must be a fall bloomer.
