The gooseberry family, which includes currants, is not widely grown in New England because it is the alternate host for White Pine Blister Rust, a fungus that decimates pine trees. It some states, it is illegal to import it because of the forest industry. I love currants but love my pine trees too, so I don't grow currants or gooseberries.

Same here, Nina. I adore gooseberries, but I love the 200+ year old white pine n my front yard more.

Not sure... but few years ago I read an article that currants have nothing to do with the pine disease. It's been a misconception for years. Latest research found some other cause. Do not remember details and plan to plant currants.
