If I had more room, you'd be the first I'd consult. One thing that has me stymied currently is I bought two umbrella trellises from J&P last year (they are tubular and weak where the screws go on the top loop, probably should have complained). Haven't even opened the second box yet. What to do with them now? I don't want my yard to look too junked up. They are the tallest ones they offered. I've spaced my roses 5' apart in the back and was wondering if I could squeeze in a couple of climbers or clematis on them. If I break up more turf in the back, I've got a large tree which is likely to drop a branch on them. The plants would probably recover, but I doubt those would. I'd really like to work them in somehow, but they just wouldn't work in front unless I put them on the grassy strip between the sidewalk and street which would look out-of-place. My back terrace I could squeeze a lot more in IF I had stone tiers put in which I've wanted to do for years. But now it would commit me for a lot more to keep up. So I'm waiting to see if I would be able to keep it up. What's wrong with the CPM? I think it was the scrawniest of the lot, may have had a couple canes crossed which I don't know how to deal with, cut them out? Then what, an even scrawnier rose? It just might start putting out some basals which is what I'm hoping for. I got the 6 planted and tried to do a good job, but then I waited for weeks to get my tiller back so think I may have damaged it retilling there had it on till rather than cultivate which cut too deep, a mistake. If it isn't better by next year and if the others seem to do well, I will replace it. clematis You have to have somewhere for them to climb. I like those ones you mention and have my eye on a couple, Arctic Ice or Queen, for one. I thought I liked Multiblue, but it is more purple. The Rooguchi would look stunning with white, my original plan; it blooms all season. I just put in a Polish Spirit but the darn area is gravelly, should have scooped a lot of it out and replaced w/topsoil, so it may not do well. 2 Purpurea plena, don't know if I'm going to like that or not. M. Julia Corr, 2 of those, think I will like them but would like them better with a white climber of comparable height. Better not take any more of your time. cupshaped was here, but I didn't get to meet him. He is good with putting things together. In spite of it all, to people who don't see what I see here, are impressed, don't see the problems like I do. Thank you SO much for your suggestions, I really appreciate it. It seems to me that you have so many in spite of our climate and are probably disappointed that some of the beauties posted here probably won't grow for us. I'm going to look at the glass half full and will keep plodding along. Wish I had more land, but I couldn't keep it up all by myself anyway even if I managed to hire some of it done.

Ruby..the part of the garden that I did that is really not that large...so I decided to do raised beds because of a standing water problem since my house is elevated on a hill...so I thought to grow UP...here they are towards the end of the summmer..you must remember my roses on the Umbrella Trellis were bareroots and spent last year getting established so the trellis aren't filled BUT this year is looking grand...can't wait to share pics when they are full of blooms... you are more than welcome to visit my website and check out the Album "From Plain to Beautiful" to see the transformation..will put a link...Enjoy...Jeanne Here is a link that might be useful: Jeanne's Garden

I'm finally able to access my pictures so I'll post a few here of the roses I mentioned. Quadra in my experience is at least as thorny as ND, but the flowers last much longer. Being a semi-double, you don't notice them fading as much and I've seen clusters last a good 2 weeks without getting ratty. I'd say mine that's maybe 7 or 8 years old blooms more or less all summer, taking a break in August as most of my roses do. Here's a shot after I finally wrestled him into an arch after a few years free standing: Here's my Colette after about 3 years, making her a young climber. She's survived both polar vortex winters, so I'd say she's fully hardy in my zone 5. Lunar Mist climbs quite well along the fence for a good 10 feet or more and is usually tip hardy for me. And even though my "not RdV" doesn't repeat, my Reine des Violettes is a great statement in spring and totally tip hardy every year. It would laugh off zone 4 winters too I suspect. The "real" RdV should repeat fairly well and it's apparently a little more of a purple cast than mine, which is a good thing in my world. Hope this helps - you have many good options. Cynthia

Ummm...what do you mean by "large" baskets, Anne? I wouldn't plant New Dawn or Leontine Gervais in anything smaller than a bathtub, and then hang it 25' above ground, and only where humans never trod, lol. Both of those roses can have canes exceeding 20' long. ND's canes are very stiff (which won't cascade downward, but will sprangle outward), LG not so much. But in either case, they aren't candidates for a hanging basket. They get HUGE, rapidly. If you starve them in a small pot, you'll never have enough bloom to justify their existence, much less the work that would go into keeping them watered. If you're set on the idea of roses in a hanging basket, look into some of the groundcover roses like the Drift, Meidiland and FlowerCarpet series, or possibly even some of the smaller climbing minis. Those would come much closer to being manageable AND happy in a hanging basket. Red Cascade is one I used to grow that has long, limber canes several feet long. It might be one to consider. It has small, bright red blooms in clusters, and lot of them, but doesn't make a huge plant.
