Roses for hanging baskets?

I'm finally going to try some roses in large hanging baskets and am hoping to use some of the roses I have in pots. What do you think of New Dawn, Leontine Gervais, Hawaiian volcanoes or any other suggestions? I've never done this but instead of buying plants that will die in the cold, I'm trying to use some of what I have or can get that will at least survive even if only to be planted in the ground later. Any success stories?

Ummm...what do you mean by "large" baskets, Anne? I wouldn't plant New Dawn or Leontine Gervais in anything smaller than a bathtub, and then hang it 25' above ground, and only where humans never trod, lol. Both of those roses can have canes exceeding 20' long. ND's canes are very stiff (which won't cascade downward, but will sprangle outward), LG not so much. But in either case, they aren't candidates for a hanging basket. They get HUGE, rapidly. If you starve them in a small pot, you'll never have enough bloom to justify their existence, much less the work that would go into keeping them watered.

If you're set on the idea of roses in a hanging basket, look into some of the groundcover roses like the Drift, Meidiland and FlowerCarpet series, or possibly even some of the smaller climbing minis. Those would come much closer to being manageable AND happy in a hanging basket.

Red Cascade is one I used to grow that has long, limber canes several feet long. It might be one to consider. It has small, bright red blooms in clusters, and lot of them, but doesn't make a huge plant.

I have my two Cream Verandas in hanging baskets. They seem happy and have been there for about a year. I did buy the baskets with a water reservoir so they don't run dry too quickly. Lisa

I do have a cream veranda in the ground and love it, good idea. I was also wondering about some of the floppy teas like Clementina Carbonieri or tea-noisettes like Crepuscule, both of which are in my pot ghetto.

I don't know the name of mine. Sweet little thing with crimson flowers - it was a Harry & David gift, if anyone knows what they normally ship. I almost killed it but it's coming back nicely. Lost all it's leaves and I was ready to toss it out but stuck it under the begonia bench and forgot it. Now it's leafed out again and looks very healthy. Resiliant! I'm about to feed it and see what happens. I haven't grown it but I can recommend Green Ice. Very unusual and pretty.

They probably wont do well in that location unless they get at least dappled sunlight. I've never had them do well in complete shade. Also, never let them dry to the point of wilting or they'll dump their buds.

Once Dancing Flame is established, it grows quite upright. It is not a good candidate for a hanging basket. One that used to be recommended for hanging baskets, but now is very hard to find is Swinger. It has yellow blooms and is very nice. I don't know why it is so hard to find.

Yeah, I started rethinking those choices, thanks for your input. They look so harmless in their little bands!. I put Jeanne La Joie in one basket as they are large but not THAT big. I have trouble with deer eating both of the ones I have out in the woods so they haven't reached gargantuan proportions yet. Once they get above deer height I expect better growth. I am looking at my pot ghetto looking for ones growing out or down instead of up. Thinking of hanging fishing weights on branches if need be. Or crystals, Mt. Shasta has about a dozen crystal shops, lol.

Lol, my friends have a Jeanne Lajoie that COVERS the entire side of their garage each season...and that's in Michigan where it suffers some heavy winter die back most years. I have grown roses in hanging baskets but for the most part they were minis and small ones at that, Green Ice, Cinderella, Baby Betsy McCall and Nostalgia. I tried to grow Margot Koster in a basket but she wasn't happy there and died.

Anne - I planted a band size Hawaii Volcanoes last September in the ground in Boston (6a). It's vigorous and grew to 6 feet before winter. It is cane hardy where I am, so temps should not be a problem in your zone for this rose.

One of the reviewers at Heirloom said she/he grew Pretty in Pink (the ground cover not PIP Eden) in a basket. I think the challenge with a basket is getting one that is deep enough for the roots.

I love the idea of plants in baskets, but pretty much given up on them altogether due to the whole if they get enough sun to grow decently, then its to much to keep up with the watering issue even with annuals! I do have a couple of stringy fuchsias and an ivy geranium lingering on tho...

To discouraged to try it myself, but I've heard Sweet Chariot can do quite well in a basket,

'Sweet Chariot' CAN be grown in a basket, but having had one in a pot at the top of a retaining wall for a good decade, we took pity on it a couple of weeks ago, and put it right behind a new retaining wall. It did "OK" in that pot, but just OK, not great.

Kim Rupert assures me that in the ground, it's going to be much larger.
